The full extent of a devastating blaze that engulfed a garden shed before ripping through a family home in Alverstone Garden Village yesterday (Saturday) has been revealed.
Firefighters were mobilised to Woodside Avenue at 16:25 when reports were received of a shed fire. The situation quickly escalated with the first crew on scene – Shanklin – realising the blaze had spread to the roof of the detached dwelling, resulting in further resources from across the Island being called in.
The property was soon well alight with an aerial ladder platform from Ryde drafted in to help tackle the flames from above.
4 main jets, 3 hose reel jets and 16 sets of breathing apparatus were used to tackle the fire, with the electrical supply to the property isolated.
As darkness fell, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service had surrounded the fire but were working externally to extinguish the flames due to a partial roof collapse.
Sadly, it has been confirmed the roof, first and ground floor have all been damaged by the fire with the ground floor also suffering water damage.
Last night 2 crews from Newport and Cowes remained on scene damping down hotspots, but all resources have now stood down from the incident.
