Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s ‘Day of Christmas’ event due to the bad weather that is forecast for this Saturday (18th November). The decision was made by senior members of the Council following advice from staff who had been monitoring weather forecasts. Councillor Andrew Garratt, NCCC Chair, has said:
“We realise this will be very disappointing news, however safety is always paramount. The forecast suggests strong winds and rain which will make it difficult to run the event safely. The event will be back next year bigger than ever and hopefully will incorporate Newport Minster and The Quay which has proven popular in the past.”
SKATES will still be holding their free skating sessions for those who have pre-booked. NCCC would like to thank Mark and the team at SKATES for their continued support of the event. Although there will not be an official switch on, residents can expect the lights to come on during the evening on Saturday. It is anticipated that 64 High Street will host a Christmas-themed day including a grotto and activities closer to Christmas.

translates into “we realise that crappy weather means we won’t make much money out of it, so we cant be bothered doing it”
And so it should be! How about holding a “christmas” event in December, the month of christmas perhaps. Or is December now the start of easter celebrations?
Without sounding humbug it is much to early to hold this event. Make it on the first or second weekend of the actual Christmas month!!

Less rubbish for us to pay for!! Bet those road closures are not cheap and the disruption to shop keepers whilst freeloaders enjoy a free event paid for by hard working people, happy this is cancelled.
