A cyclist injured in a downhill crash on the seafront at Shanklin has been taken to hospital this afternoon (Sunday) – after unusually being assisted by Coastguards and lifeboat crew members.
It was at around midday that a female cyclist was injured as she travelled down Hope Road onto the Esplanade at Shanklin, sustaining what is thought to be head and back injuries.
The first responders on scene were Coastguard Rescue Officers on patrol in the area, who provided immediate casualty care.
In response to the emergency, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service mobilised a rapid response paramedic, a critical care paramedic, an ambulance crew and an operational commander.
Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat also responded to the scene with a volunteer crew member put ashore with oxygen to assist.
Once immobilised, the female casualty was placed into an ambulance and conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport for further assessment and treatment.
Hope Road remains open.
It is not safe to cycle on island roads,
IW Council need to invest in cycle lanes.
It is 2025 and cycle lanes are scarce on the
island.
Pray the cyclist is ok
“IW Council need to invest in cycle lanes.”…
Oh another obsession now …??
yet again calling for something to be done with no clue as to how it would be funded…
“It is 2025 and cycle lanes are scarce on the island.”
and yet,,. when they are provided, a lot of cyclists don’t use then & seem to prefer to hold the traffic up instead…
I hope the cyclist is OK,.. but in the report there is no suggestion that other vehicles, . or the lack of a cycle lane, are in any way to blame..
perhaps you could try putting your (keyboard) efforts in to commending our emergency services for the service and care they provide, rather than constanly trying to use every incident as an excuse to drone on about speed limits, camers, humps,.. & now cycle lanes….
”and yet,,. when they are provided, a lot of cyclists don’t use then & seem to prefer to hold the traffic up instead”. Well, as cyclists have a perfect and lawful right to travel anywhere on the road network to access the places they want to go to your comment is senseless in that you’d have to build a cycle lane alongside every single road on the Island. As for holding up traffic, I don’t know if you’ve noticed but the sheer weight of daily traffic is constantly ‘holding up’ traffic and yet you bleat about the occasional cyclist!… just boring.
Personally I am not a fan of cyclists on
roads, especially the ones who ride side by
side holding each others hands causing an
obstruction to motorists.
If cycle lanes were provided they would not
have to p*ss off motorists.
As for speeding on the island I suggest you
take a drive around the island and see the problem
for yourself, you may need to visit Specsavers first
so you have no excuses to defend speeding
on the island.
Great to read that other services were there too. Hope the lady is OK
So where did you see any information that the unfortunate woman would not have been injured had she been using a cycle lane, Enough is Enough? The only information I saw was that it was a ‘downhill crash’. Did she perhaps hit a static object or lose control on the steep downhill run and simply fall off? Was any other vehicle involved? Until the story is expanded we can’t know. As ever, you have made assumptions to suit one of your pet and inevitably ill-informed obsessions
