Police are appealing for anyone with information following an incident that saw a female cyclist in her 70s sustain serious injuries during a road traffic collision in Newport earlier today (Tuesday).
As first reported by Island Echo, paramedics and police were rushed to the roundabout where Riverway meets Hunnycross Way in the heart of Newport at just gone 12:00.
The collision saw the cyclist collide with a Hyundai as they tried to use the ‘notorious’ roundabout.
Paramedics – including a Critical Care Paramedic – tended to the involved before they were taken away under blue lights and sirens to St Mary’s Hospital.
A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson has confirmed the cyclist, a woman in her 70s from Newport, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, using reference number 44240148369 Traffic in the area remains busy, with Hunnycross Way still closed.
Island drivers just don’t care about cyclists
More like they don’t know how to use a roundabout and indicators. But regardless of who is at fault, hope the lady gets well.

Look up rule 204 of the Highway Code.
Rule 204 simply states that, if you’re a motorist, you should take extra care around certain road users. This includes cyclists, but also disabled people, older drivers, learners etc.
You could equally quote another rule that states that road users shouldn’t hold up a long queue of traffic, but should pull over where it’s safe to let the traffic pass.
Common sense has to come into it, and cycling several abreast on country lanes, for instance, is not using common sense but is simply asking for trouble.
But presumably this lady wasn’t one of those? So why the comment!?
That’s another matter. This poor woman was hit by a car. Why compare her to militant cyclists? I hope she makes a full recovery
It was an accident, unless you want to claim the driver targeted the poor victim, in which case show your evidence to the police,, or stop being so vindictive against the thousands of drivers who wait behind and overtake cyclists properly.
I actually agree with you there are some very dangerous drivers here and it is more than time something was done about it .

We can only use our bus passes on buses that go where we want to go. Soon there will be people who don’t feel well trying to cycle to their ‘local’ health centre for that very reason.

It is especially dangerous for pedestrians trying to cross the road. A zebra crossing would work wonders. However, this has got nothing to do with the accident. As none of us know what happened, it might be wise to refrain from commenting.
If there was a zebra crossing the majority of cyclists would not stop,
but one needs installing for the safety of pedestrians from motors.
Sadly there is no safety on the Island, look at Godshill for example
they could do with a few Zebra crossings being installed.
Hopefully the cyclist is ok.
How awful for someone of that age, as shock can be fatal. Let’s hope she is made of strong stuff and makes full recovery.
Too many idiots drive like seconds count, when, in reality, life and health is all that counts.
No patience, no thought that someone elderly may not be able to hold a hand out to signal and keep steady, so just roar by, and blame them when the inevitable occurs.

Maybe NOT in this case, but many many times we all see such actions on Island streets now so can’t help expecting such when an accident occurs.
I’m sorry I agree with most of what you said but may not be able to signal and stay steady on the bike ! Then in that case they should not be riding a bike surely especially on such a busy road
The standard of driving and being alert for other road users is atrocious. No wonder car insurance is up There is a large minority of car drivers who should put their brain in gear and stop being such muppets.
Highly doubt the driver intended to hurt anyone and the fact remains then that people do not drive as cautiously as they should and consider that not every vehicle will be a car. A lot of the people who comment on the motorist/cyclist debate forget that had that been a pedestrian child hit, there’d be no disagreement.
I think the fact that your perfectly reasonable and intelligent comments gets thumbs downs says everything about some of the folk who post on these replies!
No one is suggesting that the car driver was of a certain religion and extremist.
This was someone who had likely travelled this route for years before the massive rapid influx of people and cars making the Island a more dangerous and unpleasant place to cycle.
There ought to cctv cameras monitoring known accident hot spots like this one
Not blaming the lady but I’ve stopped to give way to the right on a motorbike at this roundabout and had cyclists just continue past me, oblivious to traffic laws, into on coming traffic forcing cars to stop on the roundabout.
Maybe its time we implemented a mandatory basic training for push/e-bikes. The theory part of the CBT for motorbikes is something everyone on two wheels would benefit from.
Yes Matt there are indeed some idiotic cyclists (well, people on bikes) as well as some drivers and motorcyclists, not all of course, but many of whom would benefit from a re-test.
Don’t you think that ALL road users should pass a test first and display a registration number of some sort?
Drivers, obviously, but also cyclists, electric scooters, electric bikes and probably even mobility scooter users.
Anyone using the roads these days should be tested somehow and be traceable if and when they cause an accident or break the law.

Agree ,also should be compulsory to have insurance and pay some sort of road tax , and be pulled by the police just like car drivers for same reasons and drug and alcohol tested , along with the consequences if found guilty as vehicle drivers.
The roundabout is an issue especially with people trying to cross the road between the bridge and lidl.
Is it worth getting rid of the roundabout and have it as a continuous road around the bend with a junction near the petrol station side with a island for pedestrians or would that make things worse?
Lets hope the poor lady recovers from her injuries and the shock. In the meantime the people who have exploited this accident to get on their soapboxes about cyclists… shame on you.

How something hasn’t been done about this roundabout before is just unbelievable. Any idiot with an ounce of common sense can see, it’s an accident just waiting to happen. Sort it out now!
While we’re on the subject, get the bloody pot holes sorted on the roads. It’s only a matter of time before a motorcyclist or cyclist is killed. What are we paying our road tax for!

It feels unsafe in our roads nowadays. I used to cycle everywhere but I wouldn’t now it feels too dangerous out on the roads. Driving with impatient and angry people is bad enough let alone be vulnerable in a bike.

I agree – most islanders dont seem to know or follow the new highway code when it comes to bikes, and I have seen incredibly angry and impatient driving from some small minority. The “war on the motorist” campaign by the government has resulted in a rightwing culture war which can end in fatal accidents when people get into their minds that cyclists are the enemy.
Dosent look like anyone bothered rescuing her. I can’t picture it being the cyclist fault even if she was strictly speaking in the wrong. It’s a car drivers responsibility to look for, see, and take evasive action if encountering a wayward cyclist. Drives can’t say s*d they shouldn’t be there. Cars pull out on other cars all the time and evasive action is taken.
