1 person is being freed from the wreckage of their car following a 2-vehicle crash on The Downs this morning (Monday).
Police, fire and ambulance crews are all on scene at the junction of Rowlands Lane and Lime Kiln Shute – a notorious accident blackspot.
A white Fiat 500 has collided with a red Citroen C4 on the crossroads junction, resulting in Mersley Downs becoming blocked in both directions.
Firefighters from Ryde and Newport are currently working to free the driver of the Fiat by means of a roof removal.
It appears the occupants of the Citroen – a family including children – have been able to exit the vehicle.
Police have now closed the road from Downend to the junction with Brading Down Road. Motorists should avoid the area.
Traffic is already on a diversion through Arreton due to the closure of the main Newport to Sandown road at Branstone for utility works.
UPDATE @ 12:40 – The Downs Road has now re-opened in both directions.
More bad driving on the iow
more poor acronyms….IW ✔️
It’s always at that junction this is the second one in a matter of weeks need to make that lime kiln Shute one way before someone gets killed
Can’t see how that would help. You just have to look both ways up and down the downs road, double check and tripple check before pulling out across that main road.
What a drama queen
Yes its a perfect straight road if not sure don’t pull out and don’t risk other life’s simple
That has happened before now
Why the –
Our deceitful council only do safety improvements on the dangerous junctions IF they help developers gain permission to build sprawling housing estates.
I hope everyone will be okay.
Please IW ECHO think about how you word the article and reword the sentence|:
“A white Fiat 500 has collided with a red Citroen C4″
That implies the fault lies with the Fiat driver which cannot be known at this stage.
Suggest – that perhaps – saying – A white Fiat 500 AND a red Citreon C4 have collided……….
You are wasting your breath – this is a subtlety lost on I.E.
The diversion at Arreton Cross was ,of course, the Downs Road !!! and Watery Lane was supposed to be One Way. Quite an interesting tour of East Wight this morning
I don’t know why there are so many accidents at this junction – visibility is good in both directions – no excuse really
Time for another Smallbrook mini roundabout
Only if a generous developer gains from such. Otherwise the public safety matters not
Probably islander. One eye to the left the other to the right and it’s webbed feet probably hit the accelerator instead of the brakes…
Well you should know. You have 5 off them…
I don’t think the drivers are judging the speed of the vehicles approaching if they see them at all. I’ve seen many a driver pull out from the junctions thinking they have plenty of time to accelerate only to be tooted or flashed at.
Well there’s plenty of warnings that there a junction there but people haven’t got time to wait so they pull out cause a accident and get a few points just bad driving really
Build another Smallbrook mini roundabout
There’s no housing estate planned there
Yet more terrible driving on the island.
It’s sad to see that the Police still cannot afford to provide it’s officers with hi viz clothing for use at road incidents.
Thank you to the amazing emergency services for attending the scene and supporting my wife so well.
also to the witnesses that supported her before help arrived. She is thankfully only suffering from a broken collar bone and shock.
Hope your wife is doing ok? Ignore the comments above, no one was killed that’s the main thing, take care of your wife. X
same ol same ol roll on the next….
