A Police dog successfully tracked down 2 women who allegedly fled the scene of a crash in Newport last night (Sunday), in which a car smashed through a lamp post and spun into a garden.
As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to Long Lane in Newport at just before 23:30.
A car had left the road near Landscape Lane, smashing into a lamp post before then careering through a hedge and colliding with another car parked on the driveway of a residential address.
Both the driver and passenger of the car are said to have fled the scene before the arrival of Police, running off in the direction of Staplers Road.
By 00:10 this morning, officers had tracked down their suspects, locating 1 behind a bush and another inside a property at an address on School Lane, Barton.
Police had to climb through the window of the semi-detached home and, after much discussion, led one of the suspects outside.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs or alcohol, causing serious injuries by dangerous driving, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
However, she has since been de-arrested due to needing medical care and will be interviewed at a later date, the force has confirmed.
Long Lane was closed for a time to allow for recovery of the smashed up VW, and for Southern & Scottish Electricity Networks to make exposed cables safe.
The road has since reopened.

She would not have been de arrested to be interviewed at a later date she would have been bailed to re attend at a later date and blood sample would have probably been taken either at the station or hospital before bailed.
So why be ‘de-arrested’ for medical treatment, get it right? Why would it be necessary not to be under arrest while being treated? Happens all the time. And ‘interviewed ‘ rather than charged? Is there any doubt the driver caused the damage? I do hope the Echo keeps an eye on the outcome. In the meantime, tens of thousands of pounds of costs in police time and repairs/replacement to the street furniture for tax payers. And what about the shock and misery and endless time and worry sorting out repairs and insurance claims for the totally innocent owner of the damaged car and garden? All because someone made a choice to drink or drug drive and then run away. And if she is innocent, why did she leave the scene of an accident, itself an offence? And even if she is prosecuted, what will be the level of punishment for causing all this misery and cost? We all know the answer to that, dont we? And if you don’t agree with all the above, watch this space for the inevitable result ..
Overner, she would have been bailed as still under investigation, to de arrest would mean she is no longer required to be investigated and free to leave.
Scummy bitches
Driving while unfit the two women should know better, the island has become an hotspot of unruly drivers
Until drink and drug drivers are banged up and banned from
driving for life, our roads will never be safe.
Ah, yes, pulling the mental health ticket…
Too many numpties commit crimes and play the
mental health ticket.
They need banging up, people were hung years ago for
less crimes.
Drug addled, inbred bumpkins.
