A car has come to rest in the front garden of a Newport property after careering off the road and wiping out a lamp post, with 2 women arrested in connection with the late night crash.
It was shortly before 23:30 last night (Sunday) that Police responded to Long Lane, near the junction with Landscape Lane, where a car had reportedly left the road.
Officers arrived on scene to discover that the driver – and a passenger – had fled the scene, leaving the VW car in a smashed up state in the garden of an innocent homeowner.
The car collided with another car parked on the driveway, causing significant damage.
Hanpshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was subsequently called due to damage caused to a lamp post, which had left live cables exposed.
In a bid to locate those involved in the smash, a Police Dog was deployed – tracing 2 women to an address on School Lane, Barton.
After prolonged discussion with officers, the woman suspected of driving the crashed car climbed out through a downstairs window. The second woman was located hiding in a bush outside.
Both women are now in custody for questioning, having been checked over by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service for minor injuries sustained.
The car is being recovered by local agents, with Long Lane closed in both directions between Staplers Road and Landscape Lane.
Engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks are on scene making the exposed lamp post connection safe. Island Roads is also in attendance.
