Emergency services are in attendance at a serious road traffic collision in Northwood this morning (Thursday), which is causing significant rush hour delays for those heading in and out of Cowes.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has dispatched several resources to the scene on the main Newport to Cowes road, with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire Service mobilising 3 appliances from Newport and Ryde.
The incident, which took place at around 07:45, has involved at least 2 vehicles which have collided outside Northwood Stores.
Island Echo is told the road has been closed in both directions, with significant delays in all directions. Motorists should avoid the area.
Southern Vectis Route 1 buses are diverting via Forest Road, Whitehouse Road, Rolls Hill and Pallance Lane. Stops are not being served between St Mary’s Hospital and the Park & Ride at Somerton.
UPDATE @ 09:23 – The crash, which has involved a Ford Fiesta and a VW Polo, has resulted in the female driver of the Fiesta being extricated from her vehicle and taken to St Mary’s Hospital as a precautionary measure.
Island Echo is told that the male driver of the Polo is thought to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel.
In a bid to ease traffic congestion, the main Cowes to Newport road has now re-opened for vehicles heading towards Newport only. Those heading into Cowes still need to divert via Pallance Road.
Recovery of the crashed vehicles has been arranged.
UPDATE @ 12:05 – The road has now re-opened in both directions – some 4 hours after the crash.

I hope the person being resuscitated is alright
Where does it say some was being resuscitated??
I believe that there was witnessed CPR at the scene, my child was on a bus very close and people on the bus said that there was CPR being carried out on someone. Of course that could be false info but I believe that’s what the original poster was referring to.
Maybe resuscitated is the new extricated
My son witnessed it
Medical episode, old man!
And people who make shocking comments without knowing all the facts!!
I know the facts
If that was your father would you be so thoughtless
If it was my father, I would not have let him drive…
Island Echo, why are you allowing these vile trolls to post on here?
Who do you think you are? The thought police…
Stupid trolls!!
A decent human being, sorry!
No, he is not the thought police, just sick to death of know all’s who know nothing and pass comments, when the fact’s come to light the truth can sometimes make many a comment rather sad.
Condemn with knowledge of wrongdoing and not with what you think you know.
Anyone could have a medical episode at any age
Do you understand how quick a cardiac arrest can take hold? A stroke?
For your uneducated mind it’s a second – I’m so glad you can predict medical events PMSL what a fool it’s almost funny
I would if it was my mother in-law, I would let her drive up Tenison Down…
You are an arsehole
He wasn’t really old he was in his seventies . Could of happened to anyone . Some of you are heartless with your comments could of been anyone of our dad’s.
I would be very thoughtless if it was the mother in-law…
Hope the people involved will be okay and a huge shout out to our emergency services who deserve a pay rise
I do not think people that know they have a bad medical condition, should be driving. Does insurance cover a medical problem ? That driver could have killed…..
Unbelievable and heartless. A medical episode could mean anything. Doesn’t necessarily mean they have a condition. So quick to pass judgement.
Obviously have never worked in any career containing common sense! So quick to judge behind a keyboard but literally no clue, it’s worrying really
Another idiot response from some who has 0 medical knowledge – educate yourselves for god sake it’s a good job you’re not part of our front line staff
Words from a vile cretin, a coronary can occur at any age and without warning.
What a idiot any one can full I’ll suddenly anytime
For crying out loud shut up…a medical episode can happen at anytime to anyone at any age..it’s not a case of pre planning
Hope all involved are OK, well done to the response teams and emergency services.
We’ll that fiesta’s going the bin by the looks of it
Does not surprise me with all the crashes on the island.
Poor driving conditions due to weather and ‘idiot’s” parking on pavements.
Just drove down Great Preston Road, Ryde on my way to work and some
Idiot is parked outside the Council Houses along Great Preston Road
on the bend.
Some ‘idiot’s’ have no sense.
The sooner Great Preston Road gets Double Yellow Lines the better.
Come on IW Council stop ‘idiot’s’ parking on pavements!
It was a yellow car, not to sure of the reg or model.
GET IT MOVED!
I love the way that as soon as there is a RTA on the island the worlds best drivers come out to comment. And yet not one person has commented on the bird flu article
