Climate change and going green is not just happening with the politicians in Glasgow… but also at Cowes Primary School!
The school’s Eco Committee has chosen to work on reducing energy usage, healthy living and protecting the marine environment.
For many years now, Cowes Primary School has quietly been supporting ‘Green is Good’, from gardening clubs to hosting their own horticultural show, which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary. The school runs its own kitchen using organic, locally sourced and free-range products whenever possible. Every day they bake their own organic bread, make organic pro-biotic yoghurt and serve ‘cooked from scratch’ meals using seasonal vegetables to the lucky children, staff and pre-school.
In the journey to become more environmentally friendly and reducing their carbon footprint, the children sew, grow, care for and then harvest vegetables and fruit, fed by their own compost. They often use the produce to create products and dishes or sell plants to the community. The children love collecting eggs from the school’s chickens; these eggs are then sold creating a truly self-sustainable field to fork experience.
Cowes Primary School have now started the process of gaining the ‘Eco School Award’ to recognise the fantastic work that the children and staff are doing on a daily basis.
