Island groups are being urged to apply for a share of £3million in funding – with Cowes Town Council already reaping the benefits.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution has launched its 2026 Powering Communities to Net Zero (PCNZ) fund, with applications now open to community groups, charities and not-for-profit organisations across the region.
Grants of up to £20,000 are available, with funding split between projects that improve resilience during severe weather and power outages, and those supporting the adoption of low-carbon technologies such as solar panels, battery storage and heat pumps.
The scheme has already delivered results on the Isle of Wight, with Cowes Town Council awarded £15,000 to strengthen the town’s flood response. The funding has enabled the purchase of vital equipment including generators, sack trucks and cleaning materials, as well as a dedicated storage container to ensure resources are ready when needed.
Councillor Stuart Ellis, Mayor of Cowes, said:
“This funding gives us a real opportunity to strengthen Cowes’ resilience in the face of flooding. By investing in practical equipment that can be deployed quickly, we want to help our community to respond more effectively when it matters most.
“We’re very grateful to SSEN for its support.”
In 2025, SSEN distributed £344,000 to 32 community projects across central southern England, and is now looking to support even more initiatives as part of its wider £3million commitment by 2028.
Projects that are well developed – particularly those backed by energy audits – are expected to be prioritised for low-carbon funding, while around half of this year’s pot will be focused on strengthening community resilience.
SSEN Distribution’s Managing Director, Chris Burchell, said:
“Powering communities to thrive while supporting their transition to a decarbonised future is one of our main aims, and we’re pleased to open applications for the third year of this fund.
“We want to help more local organisations strengthen their resilience and support their sustainability goals, and we look forward to backing projects that make a meaningful difference.”
Applications are open until 12:00 on Thursday 21st May, with further details and application forms available via SSEN’s website. Eligible groups must operate on a not-for-profit basis and be located within SSEN’s distribution area.
Support webinars will also be held on Wednesday 1st April (19:00–20:00) and Tuesday 21st April (12:30–13:30) to guide applicants through the process.
