Cowes-based Porsche racing driver John Jones has just finished his first debut racing season with a fantastic podium place overall in the Porsche Championship.

John, who is sponsored by Shadowline, has been racing in the Toyo Tires Porsche Championship 2019 which is held over 7 months and visits 8 circuits across the UK. He has been racing in his 40-year-old classic 924 Porsche named ‘Frieda’, built by Moluto Motorsport in Stockport. The car started and finished 19 races this year!

Highlights of the season include 3x 2nd place finishes and 7x 3rd place finishes within the Toyo Tires Championship. In addition, John teamed up with Ryan Lowry to score a fantastic class win on the famous Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in September in the CALM Porsche Endurance Trophy Race.

John went into the final weekend of racing at Donington Park Circuit in Leicestershire in 4th place overall in the Championship.

After the car suffered a flat spot on the tyres in qualifying, and a misfire during race 1, the chances of moving up the overall table were against the Cowes team. John finished in the points in race 1 after a mid-race pit stop to sort out the misfire issues, but it all went down to the final race of the season which was another 40-minute driver change race. Once again John shared the car with Cheshire-based Ryan Lowry.

After John started the race the pair had planned an early stop to try and perform the ‘undercut’ on the cars ahead, this worked out for them and at the end of the race they had got a well deserved 2nd place.

The points for the overall Championship places were announced and John had tied for 2nd place overall with fellow racer Chris Valentine, however, in motorsport there is no such thing as a dead heat and after podium count backs Chris was awarded 2nd overall and John 3rd overall.

“I was so pleased with that after my first season I racing to finish on the overall podium was a dream come true”.

“We would like to thank John Nightingale from CNC Coatings in Lake for his support this year and also Adam and Carol from Northstar Conversions in Cowes for their support throughout the season”.

John is now planning for 2020 and will be racing in the CALM Porsche Trophy series, which will include a visit to Zandvoort in Holland and Spa in Belgium, as well as 5 rounds in the UK.

The car will be having a livery change over the winter and John is, therefore, inviting Island companies to promote their brand. John can be contacted at [email protected].
