Suggested changes to public space protection have met with approval from the public, according to papers released by the Isle of Wight Council today (Thursday).
The proposals will now go before councillors who will decide whether to implement them.
During a 4-month extended consultation, over a thousand people gave their views on proposed regulations controlling behaviour in the Isle of Wight’s public spaces – and almost all were in favour of the new rules. The new orders relate to dog fouling, dogs on leads, dog exclusion zones and areas related to anti-social drinking.
The Isle of Wight Council is making new Public Space Protection Orders to replace the existing Designated Public Place Orders and Dog Control Orders. The orders are needed to replace separate dog and alcohol control orders that will soon be no longer enforceable due to a change in the law.
The proposals mostly reflect what is already in force, with some amendments.
Cabinet Member for environment, heritage and waste management: Councillor Steve Hastings said:
“It is reassuring to know that our suggestions are so strongly supported on the Island.
“Most of the rules which have been in place for many years will remain unchanged under the new orders.
“There are no new rules for dogs on beaches. As originally proposed, these will continue exactly as before.
“I am pleased to see the new proposals to limit dogs in cemeteries and fenced children’s play areas – we have had requests for these controls for some time and clearly these are ideas that most people support.”
Cabinet Member for community safety and digital transformation Councillor Gary Peace said:
“We need Public Space Protection Orders to ensure public safety and help tackle anti-social behaviour.
“Most dog owners, myself included, are responsible people who don’t need new laws to tell them how to behave.
“However, we all know of, or have seen, some owners who don’t control their dogs and have no respect for others.
“The new orders make sure we have the powers to deal with the few who don’t act responsibly.”

Pointless having ANY rule or law, if no-one is there to implement such. And, IF they do, then the perpetrator always gets ‘let off’ with just a warning to do it again and then show others that ‘nothing will happen if you break rules and laws’.
Only those meek enough to be afraid of a ‘weak telling off’ will then abide by them and they are ‘very much’ in the minority.
Yes, agree. Who is going to enforce these rules? Dog fouling is caused by irresponsible owners not picking up after their dog. It is such a shame when out walking around this beautiful island and you quite frequently comes across dog poop not having been picked up! Come on all you dog owners, PICK UP AFTER YOUR 4 LEGGED FRIEND. THEY CANT DO IT!
I assume your statement that good dog owners are” very much in the minority”, is concluded by you spending the day on the beach / parks etc, counting the number of dogs, then at the end of the day counting the piles of poo left behind?
Fred you mis-understood my post.
“Only those meek enough to be afraid of a ‘weak telling off’ will then abide by them and they are ‘very much’ in the minority.”
That statement was referring to ‘any’ person caught NOT picking up.
Meaning that the ‘hard’, or ‘couldn’t care less’ people who now ‘don’t pick up’ are the majority compared WITH the meek NON pick up dog owners, who MIGHT be reformed after a gentle ‘reminder’ from authorities which is ALL that will happen. The former group imo being larger than the meek, will not.
The GREATER majority of dog owners DO pick up, otherwise we would be waste deep in doo doos by now.
Are these the same idiots who agreed to all the developments due to take place in Ryde!
God Help us all.
They seem to appear to believe that what ever they say and do will be followed by everyone except for themselves.
They still don’t appear to understand that the majority of Island people have lost total faith in them.
Haha every street We walk in around ryde my children and I have to doge the dog poo, we even have it out side our house and doorstep, I’ve never seen anyone in 19 years get fine or told off
Like I said if my Young child was desperate and needed a poop would everyone be okay if I left it there ? … I think not so why be okay with your dog leaving a poop on the street?
As a dog owner myself I agree with what you say, and I’m sure as a parent you would agree it’s not OK for parents to leave soiled disposable nappies just anywhere rather than a bin.
Incidentally I voted in favour of the dog rules. I just wish all you dog haters didn’t tar every dog owner with the same brush
Certainly a very democratic result, 1000 people took part, out of 140.000…
Who is more deluded Mr Hastings, you for thinking it has Island wide backing on a tiny % of people polled by you, or the idjeets who voted for this Council in first place, who without fear or favour have proved what a lot of Brown envelopes and lemming thinking can result in.!
Don’t remember ever being asked my opinion on anything and I was born and loved on this island all my life. What a load of absolute crap!
