Isle of Wight Council has opened two information hubs today (Sunday) with local authority staff in attendance to help anyone affected by flooding.
The supports are located in the following places;
- Gunville, Newport – to support nearby residents in Alvington Manor Road and nearby streets. The location is Ambassador Snooker Hall, 125 Gunville Road, Newport PO30 5LE
- East Cowes – at East Cowes Library, East Side Curve, York Ave, East Cowes PO32 6RU

Doesn’t help when most of the drains are blocked so the overflow has nowhere to go. But considering the floods are mostly caused by tide, I’m not sure what else can be done. So glad the overpriced break water is working…. Not. Hate to say it, but told you so
Building ever more houses to house the retired who often move here to escape the flotsam which make their area unsafe is greatly adding to our flooding problems
I fully agree with your comment about the tide but about the new breakwater I am not convinced. In what respect do you assert that it is not working?
East Cowes esplanade wouldn’t flood at all if the useless council would get out there and clear the blocked drainage holes in the kerbs of all the rubbish. But then they haven’t done it in years so why expect anything to change.
It’s about time we all boycotted paying the council tax on the grounds we are not getting the services we are paying for. One of which is to ensure drains are cleared on a regular basis to avoid flooding, especially when they have had warnings from the met office for a week prior to to it all happening. It would seem that the Island only gets make do public services for full wack council tax charges. Have we even got a drain/gully cleaning vehicle here?
Once i saw one outside my house…a few years ago.now..i do it now just to help them out…still waiting for a rebate..
Actually some of the flooding at East Cowes was due to high tides, not sure any council can do much about that.
Not on the esplanade it wasn’t.
Can’t help wondering what the people watching the floodwater head for their homes in Ryde make of this.
I’m trying to work out if the council decided to put both support points because they are ignoring those affected by flooding outside of the Newport/Cowes area or just to make life awkward for them.
Better than nothing I suppose though.
How many people omitted to tell their insurance companies that their area is prone to flooding?
How many people didn’t even know that their house had been built on a flood plain?
As the Council is organising the events I hope the powers to be will make sure the venue isn’t flooded!
Get out of your warm hub, get the wellies on and start cleaning out the drains, that is what you are paid for.
Once upon a time you’d see men out with brooms sweeping gutters to keep the drains leaf free. Haven’t seen them for years! Is it too beneath anyone to do such a job nowadays?
