Leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Phil Jordan, has thanked those who have helped their local community during the recent period of flooding.
Over the weekend, the Isle of Wight Council set up 2 flood hubs in Gunville and East Cowes respectively, manning them with emergency planning and flood response teams who were there to give help and advice to those who have been affected by the recent adverse weather.
Speaking on Sunday, Councillor Phil Jordan said:
“I want to thank the large numbers of voluntary groups, community groups and individuals that have come out from their own homes to help and assist in the flooded areas. They are bringing practical help and support where they can and continue to give those badly affected added intervention and practical assistance in their actions.
“I am hearing of some extraordinary examples of community spirit during this flooding, and I am humbled and indebted to those who have given their time and help so freely.
“I know that Island Roads are continuing to try to keep gulleys clear from the drain network and have teams out constantly carrying out cleaning as well as replenishing sandbags.
“Island Roads have had a busy night dealing with multiple road closures and helping around the clock with emergencies using gulley tankers, road sweepers, dealing with fallen trees and providing additional sandbags in affected areas.
“I would want to re-assure those affected that we are doing all we can to co-ordinate responses from the relevant organisations such as the Environment Agency and Southern Water and delivering the Highways element of road safety and gully cleaning through Island Roads”.
“Updates will be published during the day, this will include the council’s social media pages. For road closure details please follow Island Roads Twitter page and local media.
“Residents are asked to be considerate in built up areas when driving through surface water to avoid flooding nearby properties. “

Nice of him to thank the community for helping out. Pity they had to because his useless council did absolutely nothing. What a worthless moron he is.
The audacity of the man thanking the public for doing work that should have been done by council employees who have been pretty much invisible throughout this whole crisis. Has he been on the bottle again?
Normal people out doing what they had to because this damn council couldn’t clean out drains when they had the chance or clear ditches. Useless council now even more useless with a drunk Captain at the helm. He has taken a leaf out of Seeleys book, welcoming this and thanking that.
What an utter twat of a man.hope he reads these comments
Totally agree with these comments, it’s great thanking people giving up their own time to help, but where has the Council been? Haven’t seen them do anything. Thanks are meaningless, it’s action that is required.
The Council are too busy spending our c.tax on spongers, workshy, alleged single mums who never sleep alone, and fostering out the immigrants dumped and scattered offspring for suckers to home at our cost.
These people are getting ever more help with heating, food, rent etc, yet workers get nothing and it won’t be the above group ‘helping’ out, just taking is all they know and do.
Cut benefits to the bone, those doing part time work get so much help they wouldn’t take a full time job if you begged them, as half the week off, free rent and c. tax and all the means tested benefits DESPITE getting more and paying out less than full time working people
WAKE UP see where the money is squandered
I thought those at the top should lead by example, was he out at the weekend clearing roads and gulleys, no he wasnt, as for the council having gulley cleaning vehicles out (plural), who saw them, where were they because they were not around bembridge
Yea well he hasn’t done much to help. Thank god we support each other. He sits in his cozy little office and watches everyone else do the grafting. Waste of space. He’s as empty as his words
Well look on the bright side. It’s gives the local unemployed to do do something for a change. Just look at them.
Well let’s face it
IW Council are useless
Island Roads are also useless
So people have to come together, otherwise fcuk all will get done.
Whatever people think of the man, I just cannot see how Island Echo allow disgusting name calling in print. Criticise by all means but don’t lower yourselves to gutter language that makes some writers in here lower than the person they attempt to degrade.
I would normally agree with you, however in the case of this disgusting man I think the comments are entirely justified.
Thanks Phil .. but where were you and IWC buddies ??
