‘Happy, healthy and active’ — that’s the Isle of Wight Council’s ambition for its elderly population as residents start to live longer.
A new public health strategy has been approved for the Island by the council’s cabinet body for the year ahead.
Called ‘Ageing well on the Isle of Wight’, it focuses on the importance of staying healthy in your later life to aid Islanders’ well-being and independence.
Speaking at the cabinet’s meeting last week, Simon Bryant, the council’s public health director said the ambition moving forward was simple yet important.
He said:
“We will continue to provide and support organisations and services to enable, empower and facilitate us all, to be happy, healthy and active as we get older.”
Latest census data shows nearly 1 in 3 Islanders are aged over 65 — more than 41,000 residents. It is suggested by 2030 almost 35% of the Island population will be 65 or over.
The new strategy recommends staying physically active through strength and breathing exercises; staying socially and mentally active to combat social isolation and bad mental health.
A previous strategy was produced in 2018 to focus on the health and well-being of older people, but following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Bryant thought it was an appropriate time to look again at the topic.

I would age a lot better if I didn’t have to pay the outrageous council tax bill that just came through my letter box. Sack off all these useless council staff and only charge us for the things that might, like the bins. Can’t see that I get much else for my money other than councillors squandering cash.
Not known as the stealth tax for nothing. Just waiting for the window tax to come back!
Steer clear of experimental medical procedures that were forced on people recently.
“Steer clear of experimental medical procedures ” – Good idea
” that were forced on people recently” ??? really ?
if, as I assume, you’re referring to Covid Vaccinations, .. – nobody was ‘Forced’ to have one!
(most enlightened people chose to, but no one was frog marched against their will into a vaccination centre and given a jab)
(most enlightened people chose to
ha ha ha – you mean the gullible mugs that believed every lie that fell out of the mp’s mouths on TV got jabbed
the most enlightened didn’t get jabbed, as they knew it was experimental and no long term studies had been undertaken to ascertain the effects
all those that have been jabbed are the long term study and as such are the guinea pigs
you obviously have COVID brain. take it easy and avoid speaking or writing because you aren’t thinking right. poor love
Oh this is priceless.
Whatever you do – don’t get ill or suffer from dementia.
I have been asking for help and support for over six months and received none.
You are on your own.
Totally agree with you, sugar coated words from a oh so caring council (I think not). Covering our precious green spaces in concrete isn’t go to help, neither the continuing over stretched medical services nearing total collapse..
Me too, YJC. Have been trying to get help for over a year now for my mum who has dementia and the council have not so much as lifted a finger to help. We are on our own as far as the council are concerned.
How much of public money has been appropriated to this department and how many Exec/Admin positions created? I only ask as they will not capture all those that do actually benefit from some form of intervention as many are disabled either physically or mentally already, and those that are not are old enough and intelligent enough to know what to do to keep healthy and fit. The issues being there are not enough affordable easily reached places to do so without having a income well over the current Pension levels. They need to take a leaf out of Japan’s views regarding the elderly and no this doesn’t mean an all expenses paid trip to Japan for someone just do good research on www. In Japan age and life experience is respected highly.
Keep active and healthy!!!!!
Eat well keep warm !!!!!
All great advice !!!!!
Shame no one can afford 2 …..
Has no one told you we are in deep doo doo commonly known as rip off council tax, high energy bills, rising food prices etc etc …..
Maybe just once in a lifetime you could not rip us off ????? Lol…..
Once a joke Always a joke ….
I am glad that the council is seemingly going to do something about it. At IWUFT (Isle of Wight University for Free Time/former IWU3A) we have been supporting older people for over 30 years without any council grants or financial support but only through our incredible volunteers.
