A car has crashed into the rear of a bin lorry at Merstone this lunchtime (Thursday) – but the driver has thankfully escaped injury.
The blue BMW 1-Series has rear-ended the waste collection vehicle on a sharp bend at Merstone Lane, near to Bohemia Corner.
Senior managers from Amey have been called out and Police are in attendance at the scene.
No one has been trapped or injured in the crash, which occurred shortly before 11:35.
Merstone Lane has now been closed in both directions between the RSPCA and the junction with Blackwater Road. Motorists should divert via Rookley.
Residents in the Merstone and Arreton areas can expect disruption to their usual bin collection service today. The Isle of Wight Council says that waste receptacles should be left at the kerbside and they will be collected as soon as possible.

Worse corner on any road, obviously not an Islander and if they were they should know better.
Any corner is dangerous that’s why you are supposed to drive with due care and attention.
“but the driver has thankfully escaped injury”
So what about the lorry crew – presumably they dont matter ?
Yes, them bin lorries are so small, really hard to see. And the flashing lights and noise just makes them fade into their surroundings, so easy to not see them.
You need to go to specsave
On a sharp bend, obviously the idiot was going to fast. Looks like the same one I saw roaring around town the other day.
Why don’t you tootle back to Tooting. They must miss your wisdom
Totally Agree or tell the village thats lost its idiot that we have found him
Typical low iq islander comment
Always on the side of the wrong-doer aren’t you.
Did the driver really hate the car that much !
Unreliable car wouldn’t fit in dustbin..
“Please just take it away!” he said.
Bin Men are not having much luck this week , Bin Lorry caught Fire in Freshwater Monday .
Oh no was not speeding, .. obviously
In a BMW ? They never speed or drive stupidly, and ALWAYS use their indicators. Not likely to be an old person driving one of those !!
Ahh the great telepathic Ting Tong at work again, read the age in your organic tea leaves? Or your multiple balls crystal?
Just out of interest- how old are you?
I think we need to be asking the mental age of ting tong really.
TT from T is on his school holidays and his parents are letting him play on the computer
Judging by the utterly pathetic comments that this clown keeps posting on Island Echo, this can only be a 4 year old with incredible ability to use modern tech.
Or simply an idiotic lowlife with nothing better to do, than wind up people with this continual round of idiotic comments.
yep another island driver that need a retest. but the stupid bin man stopping on a bend also needs to look at the highway code book. there not the best drivers are they. then he’s a island as well
Not the best drivers???
Have you not seen the gaps they can reverse those things into? They are amazing drivers
Moto is – when driving always expect the unexpected , that bin truck could of been a child, horse cyclist etc the corner is 30mph
More rubbish driving!
It was actually a young driver
That’s what you call a rubbish! Driver
Yet another stupid comment where does it say it was a elderly driver
I’ve seen you referred to as a “twat” in the comments section previously.
I find myself unable to disagree.
One more brain cell and you would be a yoghurt or is that insulting a yoghurt.
Bloody idiotic BMW driver. Probably driving too fast and couldn’t stop in time. Thank God none of the Amey guys were crushed or killed.
Why is everyone in such a rush all the time. Slow down for Christ sake and enjoy the island.
More Rubbish drivers on the island roads.
At least he tried to dispose of the car. It was just too big to fit. Hope all the workers are ok.
All that can be said apart from blind driver ,,,, good job the bin lorry operative wasn’t stood there at the time.
Obviously wasn’t stopped, collecting as the bin is in travel mode ring way round
Must of been a pensioner another one can’t see in the sun
Just to clarify, he wasn’t speeding or trying to overtake and he isn’t an idiot BMW driver, the dustcart was on a blind bend and could have put one of the loaders on the bend to warn vehicles that they were there, when people make comments disrespecting people they should think about the consequences on the person who has just had an accident, and yes, thankfully the crew of the dustcart were unharmed, but the family dog in the car did suffer a slight injury, but I am sure she will be okay, and thank you to the person from Amey that took the dog to the vets
And he still managed to crash, jeez was he day dreaming lol. Hope the dog is ok however I feel sorry for the pooch for having such a plonker of a owner who can’t drive.
So nice you islanders are so sympathetic to visitors putting money into you economy
