A suspected drink driver from Newchurch who said he couldn’t give a specimen of blood because he was scared of needles has pleaded guilty to failing to provide.
Raymond Jennings, 56, of Alverstone Road in Newchurch, pleaded guilty to 1 count of failing to provide when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, said that on the afternoon of 2nd October, Police received a call from someone at The Fighting Cocks pub stating that a man drinking there was possibly going to drive home. The Police were subsequently alerted to the number plate of Jennings’ car.
An officer saw Jennings driving along nearby Bathingbourne Lane, soon stopping him on Watery Lane. The 56-year-old cooperated fully with the roadside procedure, blowing a reading of 78.
At the police station in Newport, Jennings gave multiple more breath samples until officers realised that the machine was broken. At this point, Jennings was asked to give a sample of blood or urine. To this request, Jennings said he wasn’t going to comply as he was scared of needles.
Jennings has 1 previous conviction for another drink driving offence committed back in 2013 and as a result, is liable for the minimum 3-year driving disqualification.
Amy Hosell, defending, said that Jennings has shy bladder syndrome meaning he couldn’t urinate outside the home and that he believes he does indeed have alcohol issues.
The case has been adjourned to 11th November to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled. Jennings has been handed an interim driving disqualification in the meantime.

Scared of needles? – but happy to potentially seriously harm/kill himself or others. It’s a tiny needle, has he had his COVID jab, flue jab ? etc. Can’t pee out of home, I am shy too around that but- if I was arrested think I would wet myself out of fright any how. That much drink ! would soon need one . Some odd excuses people come up with.
If you ‘fail to provide’ I thought it is given the detainee is classed as guilty, over the drink drive limit?
This chancer knew he was over the limit and thought he could get away with it by refusing to give a sample. This selfish idiot obviously didn’t learn his lesson in 2013 did he.
Ban him for 3 years. We don’t need idiots like him on the public roads.
I urinate in a toilet, not outside my home…
What’s that disgusting smell….? Oh yeah it’s the unmistakable stence of bullsh*t. A grown man ‘scared of needles’ AND ‘shy bladder syndrome’? It’s laughable the pathetic excuses people come up with when they’re up the proverbial sh*t creek without a paddle.
Yes, your honour, you can’t send me to prison as I’m frightened of being shut in.
Also your honour, I’m extremely claustrophobic….and not to keen on all male showers.
I have shy bladder syndrome too! (NOT) Absolute bollocks, think the excuses these days are laughable, be careful of laughing at this comment?
