Potentially controversial traffic orders that are set to be introduced in Ryde and Binstead in the near future, will be discussed next week.
Nearly 30 Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) are proposed by the Isle of Wight Council across the 2 areas and could see more double yellow lines installed.
Following a consultation period in the summer, the authority received 1,455 representations.
Concerns were raised at the time by parishioners of Holy Cross Church in Binstead, over plans for double yellow lines on Church Road. They feared, if the restriction was introduced, it could lead to the end of the church, as the congregation would not be able to park nearby.
They said they were unnecessary and in all the years they had been going to the church were not aware of any safety issues caused by parking on Church Road. Of 162 representations received in relation to Church Road and Pitts Lane, 29 were supportive but 133 were against the plans.
Another controversial scheme is proposed for Mitchells Road in Ryde, where double yellow lines are planned for its entire length. More than 75 objections were submitted against 34 comments in favour.
However, many residents will be welcoming the news that double yellow lines could be installed on a section of Great Preston Road in Ryde, where cars parking left and right cause a massive hazard to motorists.
The cost of installing all the restrictions is put at £19,390.
The authority said it recognised the risk of reducing on-street parking in areas if the restrictions were implemented but said priority was given to road safety and movement of traffic.
By removing the inappropriate parking, the council said it would increase visibility, create passing points and free up footways. It tried to keep the orders to a minimum in order to preserve as many spaces as possible.
It will be for the cabinet to decide next Thursday (12th January), whether to approve all, some or none of the proposed TROs.
If the restrictions are passed, the council said it will monitor the impact of the changes and review them if necessary.

Well I hope the selfish family who constantly park either a van or cars half on the road and half on the narrow pavement along Great Preston road are now happy.
This is all because of them, and now the limited parking opposite their home will be even more difficult to find a place.
The S.A woman who thinks she owns the road outside her social rented ex council home will be even more zealous in damaging cars which she sees as encroaching onto ‘her’ parking area.
This will add to social disharmony all thanks to an ignorant family of ‘look at me I can do as I please types’.
Very true.
People will have to park down Nicholson Road, plenty of spaces round there.
IW Council should charge Households Parking permits, some Households have 3 cars and work vehicles making it difficult for 1 car families to park when they return home from work.
Roads are not designed for large vans and large SUVs
Personally I would block off 1 end of this Road so Great Preston Road is no longer a
Rat run.
Marlborough Road is a much wider Road to handle the traffic load.
Agreed, the parking of suv and large vans does cause a problem, and people who bring large work vehicles home and park outside other people’s properties, which makes it awkward and almost unsafe to exit your driveway, HPR is a classic example where large commercial vehicles are left overnight or for longer periods, even though I except that legally you can park anywhere, it’s pretty unsafe for house owners who are trying to get in or out of there driveway, I’ve actually witnessed people park there cars, a taxi then arrives and they disappear in it.then reappear a week or so later !
the best way forward is residential permits, like other parts of Ryde, ie The Strand, and a ban on the parking of commercial vehicles in those areas.
Very true.
I would not allow such vehicles to park along residential Roads.
When driving off Bungalow drive it is very dangerous
Vehicles this size cause such a blind spot.
They should park round Nicholson Road Industrial estate overnight.
At least the family in question WORK and FULL TIME work, not sponging off the state claiming for joey kids in subsidised rent and council tax homes that I subsidise.
Builders need to park to unload tools and collect equipment. All very well for those who only need to put their clones in a car to drive to school and then back on social media all day, interspersed with day time TV and have to get off butt once a week to open the door for food deliveries.
The road is now full of spongers and those claiming for joey kids so they can then get an allocated parking space and free new car.
Who do YOU think pays for all that prob is most of you DON’T think
Get a life that YOU pay for, not us via stealth taxes.
Whether working or not it does not give a family the right to put lives at risk
by blocking pedestrian walkways and bringing the Road to a standstill because vehicles cannot flow freely because they have parked Illegally on a pavement.
Read the Highway code.
The family you are speaking about leave vehicles on the pavement 24/7
not just to load or unload, hence persons frustration.
Safety is imperative for all, whether working or not working.
IW Council are doing the right thing for everyone not just a selfish family who think
they can do what they want.
Grow up and get a life.
But if they parked wholly on the road surely that would impede the traffic even more! So how will that make the traffic flow more freely?
Chavs, low life, skanks you mean?!?!?
These types ruin it for everyone else. Though parking restrictions are needed to ensure a safe, constant flow of traffic. Might have been ok years ago, but given the increase in island traffic, yellow lines will hopefully remove these inconsiderate parkers.
Very true.
I cannot believe it’s 2023 and the Island still does not have
enforcement Companies clamping and Towing away vehicles that
Park on Pavements.
It’s not called Dinosaur Isle for nothing.
The Council would make millions every year.
Also permit parking Islandwide is another great money spinner.
Too many Households fill the streets with vehicles and pay nothing.
Why should a family with 1 vehicle pay the same Council Tax as a family with
many vehicles.
By introducing these measures they can keep Council Tax down.
All the Authorities need to do is tow away vehicles outside
90 Great Preston Rd
Why should everyone suffer due to 1 family who are selfish and don’t
care about other people.
They just parks wearever they want to. we got a child with leerning difercultees so needs a car outsides are house. he dont so put yellow lines outside his place now. they woodent tolerate it back wear i come from i no.
nothing to do with screwing drivers for more cash..thers a parking problem in Ryde, how will this help? fire engines can still pass, if you cant drive down a narrow road give up driving as your a danger to others, we don’t need to cater for sh1t drivers in the real world.
Man, even church is car-dependant in UK! The Church of Car! How did religion survive in middle-ages? I also didn’t expect church to so readily announce they are not interested in protection of life.
What a load of rubbish! I imagine you don’t attend any church otherwise you wouldn’t have made this ridiculous statement! I also and sure you don’t know where the church in question actually is! Shame on you!
Agreed parked vehicles in Great Preston rd causes some hazards but does slow most traffic,if parking removed speeding will then be more of a problem,”got to get my McDonald’s order .!
Cars and vans parked on roads are a danger, to people and other road users. Those that park on the pavement cause even more danger. Not only to pedestrians, but also the road infrastructure. Pavements are not built to withstand the weight of vehicles… Too many drivers thinks they have the right to park in front of their homes… you are sadly mistaken. Roads are for everyone. How about they bring a law out saying maximum ONE VEHICLE per home…. not one per person…
Council Tax should be based on the amount of vehicles an Household owns.
Road fund licence should be charged on actual size of a vehicle not engine size,
but the size in length.
Imagine if all homes owned a Mini, there would be parking spaces for everyone.
So many Drivers drive around in huge cars with only the driver inside the vehicle
‘What’s the point’
Think of others.
Residential street residents can just, idk, park in their garages or driveways? I don’t understand why they’d expect me and others to subsidise parking for their vehicles but not, for example, my cold storage for board games. Seriously, can we keep residential streets clean for children to play ball, ride a bike and occasional resident pass by twice a day? What’s up with Brits and giving all the space to cars, why are you so behind Netherlands it’s literally the 80s here :FFF
50yrs ago I visited the netherlands and saw all the safe areas within housing estates for kids to play in, even the streets, still not happening in this country!.
You go up north to Wigan and surrounding areas and they have safe play areas for children within estates and still enough room for cars . Unfortunately the island can only take so much and should limit the number of cars per household especially in small residential areas.
IF YOU WANT TO OWN A VEHICLE, YOU MUST ALSO OWN A PLACE TO PARK/STORE IT ON.
In the oldern days, these were called stables.
# Reclaim the streets.com
When are they going to repair the road up by smallbrook junction… it is in a terrible state. I know they will be doing the other end of Preston /alexander road… Half a job again ?? Typical… Should close the whole road repair and resurface the lot all at the same time..
Southern water are starting work here on Monday with one way traffic from the lights to smallbrook lane so we will see what it’s like once they are finished
This council, like all public sector bureaucracies, just love throwing their weight around, delighting in introducing more restrictions, making life more difficult for people, introducing the chance of more fines, more opportunities to penalize the public and generally make life more miserable – it’s a shame they don’t show as much zeal and enthusiasm for actually delivering the services we think we pay for rather than finding exciting new ways to punish the public forced to pay for them – their assault on normal peoples’ lives is relentless, whether it be under the catch-all banner of ‘safety’ or their other favourite ‘climate change’, they deliver less and less each year while introducing more and more restrictions on those they serve
The trouble is there just isn’t enough space. What are the residents of these streets going to do if they have nowhere to park their cars? Give up their cars which is most likely the only means of getting to work (or could be their work vehicle)?
It’s all good wanting less cars parked in the way but I doubt anyone on here wants double yellows outside their house if they rely on their cars.
The only real solution would be increasing the viability of public transport and cycling, which we all know this government can’t afford or doesn’t want to afford to do. Until then, schemes like this just makes lives harder for people.
If people were not selfish when Parking there would be no problems.
Some people have legs, but are too lazy to use them.
A person may own a property, but they do not own the Pavement outside the
Property they own.
It’s about time IW Council put Safety First.
The difficulty with parking restrictions like these is they simply move the problem elsewhere. Those that don’t just ignore the lines will be forced to clog up the smaller roads nearby.
These cars are not going to simply vanish because the lines appear – they will still be the same big lumps of metal that have to exist somewhere.
Much as some would like it otherwise, the car is here to stay and penalising drivers just leads to frustration and anger.
If the council were really concerned about road safety they would be including free alternative parking nearby to make up for that being removed as part of this scheme.
Great Preston Road Ryde
Urgently requires Double Yellow lines to be placed
Due to vehicles parking outside the Council Houses on Pavements
It makes it impossible for the traffic to flow safely, vehicles have to come to a complete Stop quickly, also many pedestrians have to walk in the Road with prams etc due to vehicles being parked on pavements.
Well done to IW Council for finally addressing the issue, better late than never.
Safety is imperative.
Highways are responsible for Road Safety, not tenants.
It is due to selfish Tenants that Double Yellow lines have to be put in place.
It will not improve Road safety it will though increase vehicle speed on GPR once they take away parked car chicanes!
The whole area will benefit from the soon to be introduced 20mph limit, then you’ll be moaning.
Nothing controversial here.
It is the IW Councils job to make sure Island Roads and Pavements are safe for everyone.
MUST STOP selfish families bringing Traffic to a complete standstill and making it UNSAFE
for pedestrians to walk along Pavements.
Ban Pavement Parking
What about using spare land to use as parking spaces for local residents who will loose on road parking spaces, instead of using the land to build more free homes for smack heads and swillers being moved here from mainland over spill. Typical sod you attitude and crap ideas from the council with no care or thought for those who it is misplacing because it won’t be effecting any of them. If any of them lived on any of the roads where this will be happening, it would not be happening. if it has to happen, at least provide some alternative measures for those effected by it.
The morons causing the problems are Islanders not mainlanders.
£19,390 for a bloke to walk along with his little machine filled with yellow paint!!!!!
Where and who do this IOW Council get these quotes from?
I suppose they don’t care, it’s not their money, us Council Tax payers pay. Disgusting price for yellow lines to be put down.
Would be a great idea to Tow Vehicles away who park on pavements.
Plus issue them with 6 points on their licence and make them take a re-test.
It is Illegal to actually park on a pavement.
Lack of education seems to be the problem with people who park on pavements.
All it takes is 1 backward family who think they can bring an whole Road to a
Standstill by parking on the pavement.
Come on IW Council it’s about time you done something about it.
Come down Great Preston Road and see for yourselves the carnage caused by 1 family
Yes 1 Family
Wot is wrong with you lot down The Great Preston Road ?
We had a similar problem in Sandown, and the selfish f*****s don’t do it no more !
How did it stop in the end Ting Tong from Tooting ?
IW Council and Island Roads have a duty of care to make sure
Island Roads are Safe.
