Stormy weather over the weekend has resulted in significant damage to a concrete groyne on the beach at Shanklin.
The end of the groyne, located at the northern end of Shanklin Esplanade, near the car park, has completely separated from the rest of the structure.
The Isle of Wight Council has said that assessment work is underway to determine whether any temporary shoring up is required. The view is that a full repair will be carried out in due course.
It’s unclear at this stage what effect the damage will have on the surrounding area.
The weekend’s weather proved to be problematic, with Island Roads responding to no less than 20 different incidents, from fallen trees to downed power lines.
Dave Wallis, Operations and Maintenance Manager, said:
“It was a very busy period and I would like to thank our staff and contractors who were working in some pretty unpleasant conditions in order to keep the network safe and open.
“Thank also to the members of the public who reported highway incidents to us.”
Island Roads dealt with the following situations:

18.46 | Tree affecting highway | Blythe Shute, Chale |
20.09 | Unsafe tree | Green Lane, Shanklin |
No doubt lack of maintenance and continuing sand removal not helped by the dredging that was allowed in the bay area.
A full repair in due course is that the same as the steps from Rhylstone Gardens need?
Probably blame it on climate change, like the rail expert blamed the train derailment on debris on the track due to climate change, until it was proven there was no debris on the track to cause it.
Or Covid. Or even Brexit, or..the list goes on.
