For the next 2 weeks, there will be some changes to waste collection services for those hit by severe flooding over the past few days.
For the next 2 weeks, in flood-affected areas ONLY, there will be:
- An allowance for 2 additional black bags of side waste — this will run over 2 weeks covering this week and next week’s general household waste (black bag/bins) collections.
- Extra food waste will be collected and must be placed next to food waste caddies.
Collection crews are currently monitoring those roads affected by flooding.
In addition, for those affected by flooding:
- While van permits are still required, you do not have to wait for the physical permit to be issued for immediate visits to the household waste and recycling centres (HWRC). Residents should complete the application form, note the reference number and take the number with them to their booked visit.
- You should not attempt to dry out soft furnishings due to contamination from flood water.
Natasha Dix, service director of waste and environment at the Isle of Wight Council, said:
“Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the flooding over the past few days and is now facing that awful clear up.
“We have put these temporary measures in place for the next two weeks.
“We would also like to remind residents that we now have a same day booking facility in place at the HWRCs so if you need to dispose of items quickly as a result of the flooding, you are able to do so — simply visit www.iow.gov.uk, or call (01983 823777) to book your same day trip.”

Same day bookings for something that never needed booking at all before the Covid Hysteria. Covid gone – rubbish half service remains. Pathetic.
I have to agree with you Mr Payer. It’s high time the Soviet system of booking for simple facilities was abandoned. It’s just another way for the council’s employees to exercise control over the people who fund the whole shebang. These are the same officials who have placed over 60 signs and notices around the tip, all of them designed to keep us in order and most of them treating us as imbeciles. Who the hell has time to read 60 signs? Your 15 minute appointment would be up before you finished. The place needs a damn good shake-up.
i totaly agree Pete since covid the staff are not working 100% as they should ,it is another way of controlling who comes and who goes . its like the I.O.Council who now likes working from home? or a beach . the goverment notified all local goverment to return to their normal Office dutys
What? only two black bags, many of those concerned have had everything from bedding, clothing, toy’s,furniture, carpets,food etc. This flooding is particularly down to Isle of Wight Council and it’s failure to warn and provide sand bags and erect flood defences, many affected have also not been able to get insurance cover. Least the IWC could do is put some large skips out (like other local authorities do). Not just a couple of black bags,such an insult to those who are suffering and who have paid thousands of pounds together in Council Tax.
The amount of council tax we pay we shouldn’t see any flooding. The sewage companies easily get rid of their waste constantly so why can’t the council do the same

when the rivers are full and overflowing, & the tide is not only in, but in on an equinox spring tide, with a storm surge.

Even if the council were perfect, and competent, (which they most definately are not), there would still have bene flooding….
Council Tax is the biggest con in the UK
Paul i keep asking the I.O.W Council if the Council tax is still a PROPERTY TAX .only today i got a reply, but would not confirm to me in there letters to me in 2019 .
the councill Maintain that the council tax is based on the valuation of your property ,? the valuation of the propertys have decreased in value by 6.7 % ,lets see how much the I.O.W council put up the Council Tax for 2023-2024?
The council are not able to control the rain or the height of the tides (which have been the highest of the year over the past few days). So how is the council supposed to prevent any flooding?
Let’s all blame the authorities for the flooding of the houses. Don’t somehow think that there was a gun pointed at homebuyers heads forcing them to buy in areas that have been known to flood for years and years some up to 100 years. It’s called common sense do not buy in areas prone to flooding
Yeah, but you can blame them for allowing houses to be built there in the first place (they have / had the power to prevent it)

No fun but they couldn’t buy houses if the Planning Department never allowed those houses. So yes, there is some blame to be had by the feckless and utterly useless IWC Planning Dept.
There should be no homes developed or constructed on any flood plain area
And what about the people who have a survey stating “there are no environmental issues affecting this property” even though it had flooded before?
Better idea, reduce council tax by 50% and pick up every 2 weeks.
