A stray cat, which was admitted into the care of RSPCA Isle of Wight with a suspected tumour, had actually been shot by an air rifle. Upon her admittance, Zuleika underwent a microchip check, which resulted in vets finding no microchip. The staff gave Zuleika an initial health check where it was thankfully confirmed she was not pregnant, however, she was in a lot of discomfort with a large lump on her tummy. Zuleika was rushed to the local veterinary clinic where it was suspected that the lump could be a tumour. This poor resilient cat, who had already endured the hardships of surviving as a stray, was now confronting a new challenge and waiting for surgery. On 21st January, Zuleika was admitted to undergo surgery. The initial concern of a potential tumour turned into a shocking revelation as the veterinary team discovered the true source of the cat’s agony – a cold and heartless act perpetrated by an air rifle. A hidden air rifle pellet had been lodged in poor Zuleika’s body.

“This heart-wrenching incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for compassion, empathy and a collective action to protect those who cannot speak for themselves. It is our shared responsibility as an organisation and a local community to create and live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with kindness and compassion. “It is important that the local community is aware of such acts to help future prevention and to share our passion for positive change. We are all in this together.”
Despite the hardships Zuleika has suffered she is now rid of the pellet and is receiving plenty of love and care from the staff at RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch. Now that Zulieka is on the path to recovery, she will be looking for a forever home where her faith in humanity can be restored.
