A car left the carriageway and rolled onto its roof on the main Newport to Cowes road overnight, leaving Islanders asking ‘how?’.
The Ford Fiesta has crashed outside the Isle of Wight Military History museum on Newport Road, causing damage to the charity’s signage.
Island Echo understands the collision occurred sometime before 04:15 this morning (Thursday).
It appears the small hatchback was travelling towards Cowes when it clipped the near side verge, sending the vehicle across onto the other side of the road and into a roll onto the grassed area outside the museum.
Police are aware of the incident and have marked the vehicle accordingly.
UPDATE @ 09:05 – It has been confirmed that Police were called to the scene at 03:17 this morning.
1 person has reported minor injuries.

It’s got to be speed that’s causing all the one car accident and not driving to the condition at the time
Should be the Police, NOT the Islanders asking ‘how’, and checking for drugs, alcohol or both, then for speeding, then the road surface, mechanical damage, and finally drivers mindset.
Always easier to do nothing of course
Chill out just a accident
Drunk texting speed or drugs take your pick
You have some evidence, Old Bean?
Sorry, I was high on drink and drugs while texting
At approximately 0415 this morning, there was a scarily enormous gust of wind – I was wide awake in Northwood at the time – and I wonder if this caused the small vehicle to veer into the hedge and then sending it across the road where it hit the kerbing and flipped over? One shouldn’t automatically assume substances are involved!
In any event, I hope the driver and any passengers were not injured as a result.
I read they think there was a mini tornado last night in the Cowes area? So maybe that’s what happened..
perhaps this was the same short, intense, ‘wind event’ that caused damage not far away in East Cowers at roughly the same time ?
https://www.islandecho.co.uk/did-a-tornado-hit-east-cowes-last-night-iw-met-service-probe-overnight-weather/
Yes it says on iw met office they believe it was a mini tornado as the wind speed and direction suddenly changed along with the thunderclap. 70mph wind gusts recorded
Cant be the wind it happed at 0315 speed must be a factor and not driving to condition at the time
Every so often the ‘anti-ageist’ brigade start whining about older drivers being dangerous and that they should be taken off the road.
We know the age of the poor woman that died on Hale Common but how many of these other incidents, reported almost daily and a lot of them single vehicle incidents, are actually younger drivers or under 40?
More bad driving on the I o w
More stupid comments from The Parrot on the IoW.
If you are doing the speed limit and hit the kirb hedge or anything else then you will almost stop within 20 feet. And not end up as far as this even if you have been drinking or taking drugs.
That statement is factually incorrect.
Stated braking distances with all four wheels planted on the road is at least double that distance for starters.
Look it up.
Thats at 30 mph!
And that’s on a DRY road in good, clear weather conditions! But the atrocious conditions last night meant that many vehicles using the roads then were aquaplaning and not even in proper contact with the road surface. Poor grip means no effective braking and uncontrollable steering. Combine that with sudden gusts of wind, reduced visibility and driver inexperience or ignorance and the car is sure to end up as this one did.
I was out and about during the school (0845 ) run today in Newport my God the standard of driving was bad going to fast not giving way. on there phone it was certainly a eye opener and you can see how the accidents happens I think I stay in doors next time till it’s all over
It’s not that being part of the modified car scene means they’re not loved or respected, just that some people have not the skill, experience or equipment to drive enthusiastically.. safely.
Sadly it is obvious that some individuals, not all, are putting themselves and others at risk and many of these are congregating In groups and driving modified cars on the public road like it’s a racetrack.
Yes, there’s many poor drivers of all ages driving all types of vehicles on our little roads but it’s such a shame that so many youngsters are driving beyond their (or their vehicle’s) ability and injuring themselves or others.
Even professionals come to grief in controlled conditions, but youthful over-confidence and inexperience causes us to feel invincible until the inevitable occurs..
Love to all the folks who have lost loved ones.
How true
Every time I see one of these so called “modified” hatchbacks, I wonder how long or what, it will take for these predominantly young and wholly inexperienced drivers to learn the principles of physics
I wonder, drink or drugs or both
These driverless cars are a menace….. No mention of THE DRIVER
Who rolled the car? The driver rolled their car
Perhaps the Island Echo could contact the police and fire brigade and ask them what is causing all theses ‘mysterious’ single-vehicle ‘roll over’ crashes, to find out if there is a common theme. My guess would be quite simply ‘bad driving’ for most of them, which covers: driving too fast for the conditions; driving whilst unfit to drive; driving without due care and attention; allowing yourself to be distracted. The number of car crashes caused by mechanical failure; being made to swerve by another vehicle; avoiding animal/bird in road; medical episode; tornado (really??); are probably the minority. I’m sure many more vehicles will be rolling over in the weeks and months ahead – I just hope that not too many people get hurt.
Lastly – what are the police doing about it? It would seem that some I.O.W drivers need educating in how to keep themselves safe on the roads.
I was driving from Shanklin at 3.30 this morning and aquaplaned 3 times. I drive a freelander. It was scary, but if you’re not used to driving on wet roads these things happen. How everyone is ok
mmmm… – aquaplaned 3 times – maybe you should have slowed down after the first time Hazel? (just sayin’) You were obviously enjoying yourself way too much! 😉
Modifying a car is not illegal and does not make you a bad driver (assuming that the modification is legal) I hate how many people assume that just because a car is modified the driver is a young chav that is inexperienced and over confident. Of coarse I am aware that there are a lot that do fit the stereotype and give them a bad name but not all.
Even though this does look like yet another “driver not driving to the conditions” case at first glance I wasn’t there and I doubt you were either so it seems a little unfair to comment even if this was likely the case.
Best remove the comments box then. Then just get admin to print automatically a footer saying ‘ I hope no-one was hurt’ in accidents, and ‘RiP’ in the cases of death crashes.
If everyone ‘has’ to have every fact on every subject, then pointless having comments allowed.
