A railway crossing in Ryde that is used by local dog walkers, as well as school children heading to Ryde Academy, is to temporarily close just as children head back to school.
Pig Leg Lane crossing on Rosemary Lane in Ryde will be closed for up to 10 days from Monday 12th September to Friday 23rd September. This is to allow improvements to be made, including the installation of modern crossing alert systems.
The closure will cause disruption to those who use the route for their commute to work and school, including new Year 7’s – forcing those affected to seek another, longer route.
During the completion of the maintenance works, South Western Railway will also close the railway line on the morning of Sunday 18th September.
Once completed, it is hoped the works will improve train performance and increase punctuality on the line.

Where do they find these brilliant “planners”? Somewhere someone must be very jealous of us. Schools been on holiday since the end of last month and then, just as they go back, they close the path. Couldn’t write it, could you.
FANTASTIC bit of planning…….NOT!!!!
Your right, schools have been closed for 6 weeks for summer hols, why couldn’t they have completed this work then? You really couldn’t make this up!!!!
They have had all summer to do it and they pick now someone should be sacked for this as they are definitely not fit for purpose
You do realise that Network Rail are in the process of upgrading 2000 foot crossings around the UK? They can’t just work during the summer holidays because we rely on a 300 year old term structure that means all children must be off at the same time in the UK.
Brilliant! They can’t run a train service or a pedestrian crossing.
Should say ‘ Pedestrian Crossing will be on strike for a week !’ But I agree they have had weeks whilst school was out to get this sorted.. no thoughts to others… another company that does not care about the people… (copying the ferry companies…!!)
Why not build an underpass… would save a lot of problems… obviously with cctv… ( manned preferably )
UNDERPASS ! ?
Have you ever been down there ?
Far too many weird’os about.
Should be a bridge. Even the best behaved kid will have a lapse of concentration, it’s what kids do.
What’s the danger, trains don’t run half the time as it is. And why was this not addressed during the how long how much upgrade? Ryde Pier falling to pieces, what next? The bridge at Rowborough?
The lowest of the low who live nearby would love a bridge to drop heavy items from to then film the ensuing disaster‘ for a Laff’
This is benefit raised kids not ‘wanted children living here
