The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are working to protect businesses on the Daish Way and Dodnor Industrial Estates this morning (Thursday) due to a burst water main which is causing flooding.
Southern Water were last night working in the area to replace a section of a 450mm water main that was leaking.
Now, water is gushing out of what is thought to be the same pipe around 20m further down the line.
1 fire appliance from Newport and the Incident Support Unit from East Cowes are on scene.
The businesses affected include PE Composites and Wight Crystal, although the burst appears to be external to the buildings.
UPDATE @ 10:45 – Keith Herbert, operations manager for Southern Water, says:
“We’d like to apologise to residents in Newport East, Isle of Wight who have been experiencing low pressure or no water. A major water main has burst on Dodnor Lane. This bursts extends under an area covered with shipping containers so it will take time to make the site safe for work.
“We are distributing bottled water from Godric Road. We will also be delivering bottled water to vulnerable customers. If you have urgent needs and are not already on our register or if you know someone who might have urgent need please call us on 0330 303 0368.
“Fixing the pipe may take some time but we are sending tankers of water to inject into the system below the burst to speed the restoration of supplies.
“Our apologies once again and our thanks for your patience while we deal with this emergency.”
