Work has started at Ability Dogs 4 Young People’s Training Centre in Sandown, thanks to a generous legacy received this year.
Anyone who has visited the Training Centre will know that it is an old aircraft hangar which was built in 1970. It is extremely cold in the winter and it leaks. The original cladding of the sides and roof are failing and there are lots of buckets around to catch the rainwater. The insulation is very thin and not compliant with current regulations. The original hangar doors are also not sealed against wind and rain.
With this in mind, the training centre is having a bit of a makeover.
Over-cladding the centre will create a waterproof, weather-tight building which can be effectively heated. There are plans to improve provisions for wheelchair accessibility including installing a lift and external escape stairs. Part of the large open areas will be sub-divided to provide additional rooms which can be used as offices, treatment and meeting rooms and storage.
The initial phase of over-cladding is being funded by the legacy and so the work has started. The remaining work will be phased as funds become available. It is dependent on the success of a number of grant applications and possibly some other generous donations.
In the meantime, the training of the Ability Dog puppies still goes on. It has added an extra dimension to the puppy class, but everyone seems to have adapted really well.
Carol Court, Founder and CEO said:
“It is a very exciting time for the Charity. These building works are essential and will allow us to fully utilise the building space. Currently, there are areas we cannot use because of leaks, lack of heating or restrictive access. An important factor though, was that we needed to continue to function whilst the work was being carried out, and we cannot afford to move out. ImpHouse, (the main contractor and project manager) have been brilliant, and our puppies in training have not been fazed by all the changes. I think the workmen are fascinated by our training and seem to plan their tea breaks to coincide with puppy class!”
