Work to replace over 600m of water mains in Brading is due to restart after contractors downed tools due to unsuitable ground conditions.
Several Island Echo readers have been in touch since the work began on 4th January to comment on the lack of work force on site each day. Traffic has been extremely busy in all directions leading onto Yarbridge Cross, despite the apparent lack of work taking place.
Southern Water have confirmed to Island Echo that work had been halted, but is now due to restart.
A spokesperson said:
“When we started our mains replacement scheme in Morton Road we found the ground conditions were unsuitable and there were other utility pipes and cables in close proximity, which we had not been aware of. This meant we had to postpone the work but we’re now back on site, getting ready to restart the scheme and lay the pipework.
“Traffic management is in place to help us do this as quickly and safely as possible. We will be removing the four-way lights and reverting to two-way lights as we progress south down Morton Road but we will need to reinstate the four-way lights towards the end of the scheme.
“We understand the frustrations and we’re really sorry for any additional inconvenience caused.
As previously reported by Island Echo, motorists face at least 6 weeks of disruption as Southern Water lay new water pipes between Brading and Sandown.
