Residents in the Staplers area of Newport are without water supply this morning (Wednesday) as a result of a mains burst – the second in the past 12 hours.
Last night Southern Water engineers were tasked with fixing a burst pipe between Newport and Cowes, which resulted in a loss of supply for those living in Northwood, Cowes and East Cowes. As the system was repressurised, at around midnight, a second burst was identified in nearby Newport.
Those living in and around the Staplers area may be experiencing low pressure or a complete lack of water supply this morning.
Southern Water says that a repair is underway and tankers have been drafted in to inject additional water into the network.
Bottled water is now available for collection on Godric Road at the top of Pan Meadows. Bottles are also being delivered to those on the Priority Service Register.
Motorists may face delays on Long Lane as traffic management is being put in place to allow for tankering and support vehicles.
UPDATE @ 14:15 – The repair to the burst main in Staplers, Newport, is now complete says Southern Water.
The network has been recharged and all affected customers should now be back in supply.
It is normal after a burst to see some drop in pressure and discolouration as a result of air bubbles. Running the tap can clear this and it is fine to use water as normal.
Southern Water would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding during the repair.
The bottled water station has now closed.
Typical Cowes, East Cowes, Gurnard and Northwood have no water and nothing happens. Staplers area of Newport has no water or low water pressure and they pull out all the stops ie bottled water and tankers called in with extra water to bump up the network. Everything to help the ghost town that wants to be a city
100% agree. Got told my water had to not be on for 12+ hours for them to provide bottled water. Disgraceful bias
Totally unfair that we didn’t get water in Northwood. Luckily I was able to get to Aldi in time and buy some.Isn’t it funny, as soon as you don’t have water you want a cup of tea!!
a ghost town that dont have a main post office
Totally agree Steve , prob because there’s more benefit claimants in that area and the council don’t want a claim going in
What are the other areas supposed to do? Buy up Tescos stock of Evian Water and bill Southern Water per bottle?
As I stated correctly yesterday, this problem will get worse.
With massive building of thousands of extra homes earmarked for the Island, water companies then, to cope with demand, don’t fit new mains all the way back to the resevoirs.
They instead, just increase the water pressure in old existing pipe work. Thus weak point, joints etc then burst apart.
So with Ryde and many other areas about to be ruined for the rest of time, expect more misery more frequently, and WE will pay more on our bills to cover the greed of developers causing this issue.
You had better address the staycation Airbnb issue whereby island housing stock is not available to islanders then. Island People and families need to live somewhere.
Well said “Bailed out long ago”. The people moaning about new housing estates being built are not the ones stuck in a rental nightmare. All they care about is the price of their houses going up.
