Police are keeping guard over a potential explosive found on land at a Wroxall farm earlier today (Wednesday).
At 13:48, Hampshire Constabulary was alerted by a member of the public to a suspicious object discovered when a digger was excavating ground in Wroxall.
The object has been described as torpedo like – cylindrical in shape narrowing to a point, with a half circle white tip.
Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts have examined photographs of the object and are on their way to the Island to make a full assessment.
Police are maintaining a scene guard in the interests of public safety.
UPDATE @ 22:14 – With the assistance of machinery from CS Country Contracting, bomb disposal experts have determined that there is no explosive threat.
The Naval team discovered parts of what they believe to be historic ordinance, but no longer of any threat.
Other old and heavy metal parts of other items were also unearthed.
The EOD team are now standing down.
Good God, total waste of their time.

Why would someone launch a torpedo in a pond?
Between 1999-2008 almost 2200 casualties with 834 deaths have been from WW2 ordnance. Hardly a waste of time and always better to err on the side of caution and not be a statistic and with 10%of high explosive and 50%incendiary bombs not detonated on impact (that’s the success rate). There were over 74000 tons of bombs dropped on the UK during WW2 so take out the success rate and that’s roughly how many UXOs there are?

Just why did so many not go off you ask? Quite simple. The slave labour in the ordnance factories hated the regime sufficiently to risk being caught and killed to put components in the wrong way round or omit them entirely. So bomb drops and nothing happens. Hannover and Bremen etc have very little problem by comparison.
The obvious question here is, if it is a torpedo, then how did it end up so far inland? A possible theory could be it became dislodged and fell off the undercarriage of a passing plane during WW2? It’s plausable that it became detached off a Swordfish Biplane the very planes carrying torpedoes that crippled the rudder of the Bismarck.
