Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts from Portsmouth were called in to detonate a bomb that was unearthed on a building site in the South Wight this morning (Tuesday).
Workers at the Sandy Lanes development – the site of the former Atherfield Holiday Camp – made the explosive discovery at around 08:30, prompting Police to be called to the scene off Military Road.
A cordon was established ahead of the arrival of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).
Following an examination of the device, the decision was taken to carry out a controlled explosion.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called at 08.42 after what appeared to be unexploded ordnance was discovered at a building site opposite Chine Lane.
“The area was cordoned off.
“EOD attended and took the item to a field where a controlled explosion took place”.
