Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts from Portsmouth have been on the Isle of Wight this afternoon (Wednesday).
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were called out early this morning to establish a cordon around a piece of suspected ordnance which was found just below the coastal clifftop path between Chale and Whale Chine.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were alerted and travelled across the Solent on the midday ferry from Portsmouth, arriving on scene off Military Road at just gone 13:00.
The shell was swiftly dealt with by the experts and the cordon was lifted.
Coastguard officers then re-positioned to nearby Brook Beach where they spent time yesterday looking for a piece of possible ordnance. With the aid of the EOD and their metal detector the item was successfully located and deemed not to be explosive.
The incident was brought to a close by 15:00.
