Bomb Disposal experts from the Royal Navy have carried out a controlled explosion on a suspected piece of ordnance in Ryde this afternoon (Thursday).
The safe detonation of the object – which is thought to date from the war – comes after it was discovered in a garden earlier on today.
Police were alerted to the find at an address on Puckpool Hill at 09:55 and have spent the day keeping guard over potentially explosive find.
Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal from Portsmouth arrived on scene at around 14:00 and by 14:30 had carried out the controlled explosion on the beach near the Dell Cafe.
Members of the public were cleared from the area by Police for a short time.
Getting more & more of this old ordinance surfacing recently.
Likely in most cases it is the fact that the public carry mobiles and it is easy to take a snap of any unusual object on the beach etc and send it to the experts to identify.
That and many crumbling cliffs uncovering such.
More rain, wetter ground, allows it to come up.
