Island MP Bob Seely has urged the Government to consider Isle of Wight shipbuilders when it replaces its fleet of border patrol vessels from March 2026. Mr Seely says he wants to see the contract for British vessels awarded to British shipbuilders, but particularly those operating on the Island. In a letter to Home Office Minister, Tom Pursglove, he urged the department to “actively consider the options to tender the contract for British vessels to British shipbuilders such as Wight Shipyard.” He said:
“Wight Shipyard has informed me of their interest in the contract. The company is confident that it has the facilities to make a competitive bid.”
Mr Seely visited Wight Shipyard in February. Following his visit, he said:
“Wight Shipyard is going from strength to strength. The number of PAYE employees has trebled and bosses continue to look at options to expand further and take on even more apprentices. “I’m keen to support them. The expansion of their operations will bring even more jobs and prosperity to the Island – and create career paths for young Islanders into well-paid jobs. “Our shipbuilders have the skills, the capability and the capacity on the Island to deliver this contract. I am making sure the government knows it.”

Sideshow Bob with sleeves rolled up, makes me cringe. He’s on another pop-up media mission before slipping away into political oblivion next come election time.
Pop up bob strikes again…
Having spent 99% of his time as our MP, brown-nosing the government & voting for everything he was told to,.. now there’s an election coming up, he’s trying every thing to make himself more popular to islanders, but tbh, being as much use as a chocolate fire guard.
Hold both hands up on the air and jump up and down a bit Bob. We might notice you then, this election year.
He should also be urging them to build the new chain ferry
Border Farce! Ha ha ha
Easier to get passed there than that receptionist at the quacks!
Border Force New Channel Taxi service .. stop the boats .. yes, hope on a Border Force taxi instead Well Done Tories !!
I dont think you appreciate the domino effect chucking them in the ocean will do to us personally and the economy despite the apparent deterrent it would have initially.
Pity they (HM Gov’s agencies) gave away all that potential expansion space to Bob’s good friends at Red Funnel, then.
Pop up bob, in his usual once a a week pre-election photo op. There is no way this is going to happen bob, fishi soknackered and his gang are done for as are you. Might of been different if you did this all through the last 5 years, but no typical tory desperation, bye bye tories.
Thanks to the Tories cuts and that wasteful and awful aircraft carrier, our army only has enough man power to fight for two months. We need to stop relying on the US bailing us out of a fight and build our army up. And it has to be done right. All engineering done by UK based companies. Has to be built in the UK to ensure security and integrity of the product. He should have been calling for this ten years ago.
Is that a saussage in his hand?
More vote grabbing PR.
Do they donate to the Conservative party? If they don’t, forget it.
Maybe he should ask the RNLI to stop being a taxi service!
and the reason there are not enough border force vessels (or taxis) is because the shite government that he badly represents ,cut the funding to build more.
just another sad tactic in an election year to show he’s doing something
writing letters bob is farcical ,but then again, thats all you do,when you can be bothered
dont worry though, youll be gone soon!
Not a wise idea, look at red jet 6 and 7, both built at wight ship yard and both a bag of sh1t. Get the turks to make them. They’ll come in on budget and on time.
Where was the photo-shopped image of Pop up Bob standing in a beach with the washed up bodies of refugee children after he’d voted yes to the government’s Rwanda bill? He’s keeping that one quiet isn’t he?
Shameful.
And the fact that his government is willing to pay £1.8m for every single person relocated under the scheme, in addition to paying the corrupt and despotic Rwandan government £450m for the privilege. Will that money be used to settle refugees? Hell no, they shoot them on masse. What we’re doing is financially supporting an unstable regime to arm…creating yet more wars, creating yet more refugees. Stupid and shameful.
Rwandan government £450m for the privilege. Will that money be used to settle refugees? Hell no, they shoot them on masse.
I’m interested, can you back that comment up with some verifiable facts?
Maybe then, if you have the room, put some up yourself….. The navy would only need to fire a few shots to a nearby so called small boat and they would either turn back, or take to consequences, this is also Frances fault, why should we have to put up with 1000’s of illegals coming here, going underground, and mostly turning our country into a criminal wasteland.
What’s the point, hundreds came in to Dover yesterday
are these Vessels escorting them in.
My idea of Border Force vessels is to turn Dinghy’s around and send
them back to France.
They can’t. We came out of the EU via Brexit. They knew this at the time. We now have no reciprocal agreement to enable this, hence why our government now has to pay an unstable regime to take them at a cost of £1.8m per person. You read that right….it would be cheaper to house them ALL here, even on benefits. £1.8m at £23k a year would take 78 years to start costing us more. Cheaper still would be stop arming the countries which cause the destitution/persecution they flee in the first place.
Nothing to do with Brexit. It was the EU who implemented open borders. These refugees are invaders therefore no reciprocal agreement is required to turn them around.
Brexit has nothing to do with it. They were coming over before we left the corruption filled EU. What the hell are you talking about, house them here, we can barely house our own people, let alone would be criminals. You really are stupid aren’t you. Take some of them into your household if you are so hospitable.
Bit late in the day to start doing things he should have done when he was first voted in. Actions speak louder than words, and boat/ship building should have been pushed more from the start of his tenure as MP not months before a general election. England has outsourced so many valued skills we are no longer dominant in some of the areas we were renowned for. Everything technical/mechanical is now mostly made in China – Why? What he needs to push is the extortionate amount of money we send to France to finance their very lax contribution to stopping the boat people leaving their shores as it is another money down the drain scheme as the Rwanda project will be proven to be also – once it starts.
France can’t stop them, and we can’t send them back the way they came cos we’re no longer in the EU.
We should sort out France for letting them come into our
Country.
Of course France can stop them, they leave from there bloody beaches for christ sake.
The “Rwanda project” will never start because it violates international law. The UK would be cut adrift as a pariah nation if it breaches international law. Clearly, it is all a desperate stunt to win votes. In reality, most immigrants are not arriving on inflatable boats but instead they arrive by legal routes to fuel the economic growth that lines the pockets of Tories.
I thought it was international law that persons are not allowed to enter a foreign country without documentation. These so called refugees are not immigrants as they actually throw away their documentation in order to make it difficult to return them to their homelands. Are you saying that if Labour were to govern the UK they wouldn’t expect legal immigrants to pay taxes?
Just shows this problem here to stay for decades…
Tis now, thanks Brexit.
The gift that never stops giving
So why does the EU have the same problem with Refugees. You must travel abroad more. I have just returned from Munich where they had 6 machete attacks in 1 week 2 weeks ago.
Look BOB if you want to do something that we will all congratulate you for and think your a great MP then put a bridge across West Cowes and East Cowes for starters and charge the boat owners if it need raising or opening for them and allow people to get across that piece of water easily. The floating bridge debacle has to change and stop wasting money on any more floating idea. Its 2024 now!!!.
Tunnel across the Solent and then we can access what is needed and what is not provided here.
This Island need some very radical changes.
So he wrote a letter. So what? No one in Westminster takes this silly little man seriously
Choc Teapot pop up at it again.utterly useless .dont bother..
Your seat is gone with any luck
Why are they not building a new floating bridge for Cowes?
