A fire burning inside a bin lorry has been extinguished by firefighters from Freshwater and Newport this morning (Easter Monday).
2 appliances were mobilised to Birch Close at Colwell, near Freshwater, at 08:11 when reports were received that rubbish in the rear of an Amey waste collection vehicle was alight.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus and a COBRA ultra high pressure lance for the initial attack on the fire before emptying the rather smelly contents across the carriageway.
After the lorry was emptied firefighters then used hose reel jets to extinguish and damp down the waste.
Thankfully, the vehicle has been saved from any serious damage with only slight fire damage to the rear loading area of the vehicle.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has now stood down from the incident.
West Wight residents can expect some disruption to their normal bin collections today.
Be interesting to know what started the “fire”?
A fiver says it was a discarded throwaway BBQ.
Why are the bin men WORKING on a bank holiday Monday ?
All out on Mayday.
Up the workers !
Earning money to put bread on the table for their families. Clearing your rubbish away, keeping our society functioning. Doing the job our council tax pays for, hope that little bit of education is enlightening for you.
No, not really !
It’s the slippery slope,
They will be made to work weekends next.
Cleaning up your s**t.
Old school ? Old fart ! More like.
Lol, seems like your cage got rattled, stay in it son.
Dustman have worked Saturdays during Christmas catch up and all bank holidays for past 8+ years who do you think empties the bins fairy’s
Amey would have them 7 days a week but only pay 5 days tight company. As long as crew were ok.
Note to some selfish people if it was caused by a bbq, they need extinguishing when finished, this is how bush fires start people neglecting what they do after cooking. Causing fires causes harm to people and animals think safety for all. All lorries have cameras on them so they might see which bin house it was from
Why shouldn’t they work on Bank Holidays????
Loads people do …
Police officers ambulance crew Doctors Nurses …
Shop assistants etc ….
