A break-in at The Castle Inn in Newport, which saw cash and alcohol stolen from the High Street pub, has been featured on the BBC programme ‘Caught Red Handed’.
Situated at the top of the town, the popular Newport pub was targeted on 17th August 2021 shortly after 02:00 in the morning with the newly-refurbished function room getting trashed too. The damage to the property was believed to be around £600.
Harry Mortram – who was 19 at the time – of George Street, Ryde, was arrested and charged with burglary. He was given a 12-month community order to include 80 hours of unpaid work, and was ordered to pay £630 compensation when charged at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.
The popular BBC 1 daytime show, which is hosted by Dom Littlewood, explores how police and members of the public manage to catch criminals in the act.
In the episode, which aired yesterday (Monday), co-owner Liam White talks about how they managed to download CCTV footage from inside the pub at the time of the break-in and how going on to share the image on social media resulted in the arrest of Mortram.
In the show, Liam jokingly said:
“He was so careful and so cautious, but he didn’t wear gloves.
“I’m not a criminal myself, but I’ve watched enough films to know that that’s pretty standard in Burglary 101.”
