Posties are once again striking in the continuing row over pay, leading to disruption to Royal Mail deliveries on the Isle of Wight today (Thursday).
Those who are part of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have walked out as part of a 24-hour strike with picket lines established outside sorting offices in Ryde, Sandown and Newport – despite the pouring rain.
The row over pay has been going on for months and the situation hasn’t improved, with 6,000 jobs now at risk of redundancy nationwide due to financial losses created by the strikes.
Further strikes are planned for Tuesday (25th October) and 28th November. There will also be some element of disruption when delivery workers walk out on 4th, 10th, 16th and 25th November and 2nd December. Those involved in collections and processing will walk out on 3rd, 9th, 15th and 24th November, as well as 1st December.
Royal Mail will continue to deliver as many Special Delivery and Tracked24 parcels as possible, with priority given to COVID test kits and medical prescriptions.

Sack the lot of them, total waist of space, there is a high number of unemployed people who would love there job. My wife receved a Hosptial appointment last week, letter dated 28th september, Hospital appointment was october 6th, so she missed it i phoned Newport sorting office and was told Nout we can do, Management are to blame won’t give us more Money. now she has to wait till December 2nd for her apointment.
perhaps if the NHS moved with the times and sent an email or text regarding an appointment instead of sending a piece of paper by hand, then this issue would be a thing of the past
The NHS have to cater for everyone and have to take into consideration that some of the elderly population on the Island may not use emails or have a phone.
Waist.Learn to spell before you comment
They deserve a pay rise. Do you really think the unemployed on the island would want their jobs? They work hard for their money, out in all weather, while Royal Mail reap the benefits. Your wife’s appointment, why didn’t you call the hospital as you hadn’t received an appointment letter? They would of told you the appointment date simple?
These idiots should think themselvers lucky they even have a job. If they carry on like this, a lot of them will be jobless which will serve them right.
lucky to have a job? in what way are they lucky? i thought to have a job you have to show that you are qualified to do so. No one gets a job though luck really esp not 100,000.
On the island you only have to know the right person to get a job qualifications don’t come into it.
Certain ferry port has 3 generations of the same family working there, none with qualifications.
Standing up for your rights. You should grow a back bone and try it.
Plenty of money in Royal mail .they paid 400 million out in dividends and bonuses to its top bosses.Whts good for the goose is good for the gander.
Soon the whole country will be on strike
If the MPs were paid less they could give the post workers what they’re asking for They’re out there day after day working hard so why not, The government are giving with one hand and taking back with the other somethings wrong with it all, The posties deserve it,Give them a rise!!!!!!!
MPs should be paid minimum wage.
Then paid the rest of their silly salaries by results.
Earn you wages the same as the rest of the workforce has to
tbh theyre all making a rod for there own greedy bandwagon backs.jobs WILL go.
money wont be flying towards them anytime soon.they get better pay thsn minimum wage who CANT strike.
i was a postie when the mid 90s strikes were on..wasnt in a union so had too work but was same reasons back then. practices and hours have changed but id say still put upon…yes ..but even back then wages were ok and are more now obv. quit complaining and be grateful too have a job or simply move on!
yes manages skim and always will but unreliable service RM provide anyway sometimes is another nail in coffin but its a business beit a too expensive now.
Greedy band wagon, strange statement , who are postman or the share holders.? so what you are backing is allow the cooperate to cut their wages and condition to the level that the government have to top their living wage up. Which cost us the tax payer more while large cooperate share holders increase their wealth. i am sure if you look more into this, they are not only standing up for themselves but standing up for the public in trying to protect your mail service.
a lot of royal mail shareholders are pension funds – when those posties working today retire- they will expect to collect a decent pension – it won’t be much of a pension if the pension funds, who are the shareholders are penalised.
Reading the comments already posted here (no pun intended) sums up so much that is wrong with this country.
When workers are seeing their standard of living and working conditions going down the pan as each year passes and getting worse off through pay freezes or dismal pay offers, what do they have left? Very few people want to go on strike and it’s never about being lazy. But to expect people to just be thankful for having a job? Wow!
The postal service isn’t what it was, but ever thought the problems might start at the top with the ones who are creaming off the big money, not the ones out there in all weathers trying to provide a service and earn a living.
And no, I don’t work for Royal Mail before anyone asks!
what do they have left
the option of quitting and getting a better job and/or investing in themselves by acquiring new skills to give themselves a better chance of a better standard of life.
of course they could sulk, refuse to work and stand out in the rain on no pay at all
I left a job of 19 years, a reasonably well skilled job, a job I enjoyed but had suffered from years of real terms pay cuts and was fast becoming similar in pay to working in a supermarket stacking shelves at little more than minimum wage. I didn’t leave purely because of the money, but I found a job that appealed to me and pays significantly more. Two years into my new job and in real terms, again I have actually had a pay cut in real terms as there has been no increase offered (for several years).
Do you suggest everyone just jumps ship every time they see their standard of living and working conditions deteriorate? Some people have still got the fight in them and aren’t prepared to sit back and let the minimum wage catch up with them.
Exactly,I wonder if all the people writing these negative replies have actually ever worked early mornings or been soaked to the skin and had to work like that for hrs on end ? Dose of reality needed here, let’s see you lot try it !
They worked all though COVID with no thanks , just told to do more , most go in about an hour before just to sort out their rounds and don’t get payed for it. Cost if living has gone up, and postmen haven’t had a pay rise in years most are only on part time contracts , they deserve a pay rise.
They have a tough job
Most people worked through covid, my lad was put on shift work .As they cut down the numbers in the factory at a time, and none of them got a thanks as you put it, they were just glad they still had a job and got on with it.
My Niece had to work through covid in Asda, with no thanks, just so people could buy food.
I don’t no what you did through covid, not a lot i bet or did you get a big fat thanks.
Totally agree !
Everyone wants a pay rise just imagine if we all went on stike
the cooperate money tap would stop for abit.
People don’t think that way.
If you reach a point where your income has fallen in real terms to such a level that you feel you have no other option but to take industrial action, that is what happens, irrespective of who else is doing the same.
A rail worker who has seen their pay suffer a large real terms cut isn’t going to think “I want to strike but won’t because the posties are already doing it”.
The place the blame really lies is with the people who have caused so many to suffer deep pay cuts at the same time. If you cause a stampede which crushes you then it is you who are to blame, not an individual cow.
Good for them, I support our postal workers 100%.
I’m playing spot the difference! Lucky to get a delivery a week, service is terrible
This strike is not only about pay its about conditions it is reported a pay rise of 5.5 percent which isn’t the true story it is 2 percent with inflation at 10 percent plus the other is 1.5 with conditions undisclosed which could include delivery supplement and other benefits which could see a reduction of posties pay of £40 in a cost of living crissis.Even this is not the reason I am striking they are proposing later starts with workload as it stands I constantly am working to after 5 although my finish time is 3.30 which I am happy to do to provide my customers with the service they deserve. If my start time is the proposed 12 o clock and not 9 as it is at the moment I would be working in the dark trying to read addresses on letters
