ARRESTS MADE AFTER NEWPORT TOWN CENTRE ASSAULT

3 men have been arrested following a CCTV appeal issued by Police into an incident that saw 3 women get assaulted in Newport Town Centre in January. 

As previously reported by Island Echo, at around 01:45 on 21st January, 2 females left the Hogshead pub on Newport High Street, where they had been drinking. They walked across St Thomas Square and through the alleyway to Pyle Street.

At some point on their journey, they were joined by 3 men, who assaulted both of the women following an altercation at the Pyle Street and Town Lane junction at around 02:10. 1 of the women sustained a broken wrist during this incident, and a 3rd woman was assaulted as she tried to intervene.

Police issued an appeal for information on 23rd January.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have confirmed that officers have made 3 arrests as part of this investigation.

A 25-year-old man from Freshwater was arrested on 27th January on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been bailed with conditions until 27th April.

This morning (2nd February), officers arrested a 24-year-old man and a 31-year-old man, both from Newport, on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault by beating.

They remain in custody at this time.
