Deputy Lord Lieutenant Caroline Peel and Sandown Town Mayor Paddy Lightfoot led commemorative events in Sandown on Armistice Day today (Thursday), ahead of Sunday’s Remembrance Day services.
Mrs Peel took part in a short ceremony at Sandown’s Memorial.
She said:
”Given the challenges of recent times, it is important that we take time to pay tribute to those that made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can have the lives we have today”.
Sandown Town Council recently renovated the memorial and the Centenary was marked by a visit by Prince Michael of Kent, together with a service at Christ Church, with a plaque honouring Eric Charles Twelves Wilson VC, baptised at the Church in 1912, unveiled.
Councillor Lightfoot says:
“We have worked with the local school to provide poppies for display in the Library, and also have supported a commemorative film of the Memorial, ahead of the Remembrance Day service on 14 November”.
The British Legion was founded 100 years ago in 1921, followed by the Royal Charter in 1925. IW RBL President Ian Ward BEM, laying a wreath at the memorial today, said:
”As a former member of the armed services I know the significance of these commemorations, with residents of Sandown and the Bay being involved in conflicts in the past and at present”.
Details of Sandown’s Order of Service for Remembrance Day on 14th November, with residents gathering from after 10:15, are available on the Town Council website, as are copies of the poppies and the link for the commemorative film is Sandown Memorial – The First 100 Years, narrated by Retired Air Vice-Marshal Tony Staples CBE.
