Phase 2 of a retirement park on the outskirts of Newport by Asda could be coming soon, bringing an additional 16 park homes.
Plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council by Luxury Retirement Living to add a further 16 park homes to the site near Pan Lane.
Park homes are, in short, high-quality static caravans.
The site was previously used for equestrian purposes but in September this year permission was granted for the 1st phase of development.
Work has now started to install 10 park homes but a further 16x 1-bed and 2-bed homes could be added, if plans are approved.
The extension to the park would be accessed through the same junction approved for the 1st phase of the plan off Burnt House Lane.
The development would be for people aged 45 and over, with hopes to provide much-needed housing for the Island’s ageing population.
You can view the plans, 22/01991/FUL, on the council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 18th January.

I find it insulting that they think the elderly would want to downsize from a solid built 3 bedroom house to a caravan and why for aged 45 you are not elderly at 45. As an elderly person I would love to downsize to a gated community for the over 60’s into a 2 bedroom bungalow with my own garden which would still give me independence but they are not being built on the Island. Come on IOW COUNCIL AND DEVELOPERS you can do better than this for the elderly population.
Are you kidding? They are springing up like ruddy mushrooms! Almost every new development has bungalows for oldies. Mostly being marketed to mainlanders who will usually pay above the local market price for them, however.
As for you buying one? Hope you have plenty of savings as it’s likely to be more expensive than your house. If you want it on a gated community, expect to be paying annual fees that make the Council Tax look cheap.
the problem is they are not being sold to oldies, young families are buying the bungalows as well as the mainlanders. All I am asking for is a decent 2 bed bungalow on a complex reserved for the over 60’s not every oldie wants a retirement flat/apartment or a caravan complex which is all that is being offered to them. If the oldies had something more suited to their needs then maybe they would move out of the 2/3/4 bed family homes to make way for the younger families to purchase, All the emphasis seems to be on supplying first time/affordable homes but very little choice for the over 60’s.to downsize.
You make some excellent points. Every new development seems to draw the same conclusion from the usual folk that every new home will be sold to mainlanders or some mainland council. It’s popped into my head on many occasions when I see people with a few kids that they will all need somewhere to live eventually, needing all the resources people mention like Drs, Dentists etc, not to mention maybe up to eight grand a year each to educate. But hey, let’s blame those naughty mainlanders. Gated communities with proper homes for older folks is a great idea.
Simply comparing the 2021 census data with the data from the 2011 census puts pay to your suggestion that young people are the problem. The number of over 60s living on the Isle of Wight has increased by some 14% while the number of under 60s has actually decreased, despite the Island population increasing overall and despite its death rate being higher than its birth rate.
This shows, conclusively, that the increase is due to the Island population getting older and oldies moving here from the mainland. This isn’t going to put a strain on resources in the future, its putting a massive strain on it right now.
These are facts. Provable facts and trump anything that may have “popped into your head”.
Well I’m talking about in the future, not now, so stick that in your pipe of facts and smoke it. I expect you’ll be telling me to move if I don’t like it next. BORING!
So you have changed your tune from whining that they aren’t building enough bungalows for oldies to whining that they are being bought by young people?
So now we agree that bungalows are being built, why don’t you buy one?
If you paid any kind of attention to the planning applications made by developers you would know that the vast majority of homes being built are anything but affordable and are mostly marketed at well-off mainland retirees, 2nd homers and holiday let investors.
Why are you so rude???
Good fun to wind up though, easier than a clockwork mouse.
“smiffy” – I already have a lovely bungalow thanks. Seems sensible to me to build homes for older people to help free up the housing market and keep the flow, erm, flowing. But homes are needed at both ends of the market – lots of my lovely, younger friends now have a foot on the ladder on the nearby Barratts or David Wilson (upmarket Barratts) developments. I’m pretty sure no one was eyeing them up from the mainland as holiday homes. Those flats in Gurnard you see where only one is occupied in winter though – yes, I agree 100% with you on places like those. Shameful.
Myself I would love one, I am in a one bed flat in a block.. and I feel like a prisoner, no private outside space… alarms going off, Door on auto closer, so that bangs and clunks at night… is becoming very awful living here. But council will not move me, bei9ng elderly and single… they just forget about our needs…
Was renting a nice two bed house, nice garden I kept it lovely, made a kitchen garden and enjoy growing flowers.. so felt free, with my own space… sadly the owners decided to sell, giving me only one months notice… council stuck me in this flat.. and will probably be here til i die… it is so sad..
That sucks, so sorry to hear it.
Well think it’s time fore council to build bridge near cowes.another hospital .( we used to have 3) and sort the roads out ..to cope with additional traffic .newports almost a no go area anyway trying to get in and out
Is there any need for more house’s when we have an extra 1500 + death’s per week in the UK compared to previous years!?
