The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert – and expects to upgrade this to a flood warning later today (Wednesday) – for the Eastern Yar, with flooding set to happen from Whitwell to Sandown.
According to officials, from 18:00 this evening the Eastern Yar will come out of bank at Whitwell High Street and at Langbridge near Newchurch. It will also restrict access at Horringford and be close to the top of the riverbank at Alverstone.
At Sandown, Golf Links Road and Morton Common Road are expected to flood, and levels will be high at Sandown Bridge, the Southern Water sewage treatment plant and Fort Holiday Park.
In the past 24 hours, 30mm of rain has been recorded at Wroxall and there is more to come… Further heavy rain is forecast over the next 24 hours, with a possible 20mm to 40mm expected.
The Environment Agency says it is likely to issue a more serious flood warning as the day progresses, with water levels expected to continue to rise.
The sluice at Bembridge is being operated to help reduce water levels across Brading Marshes while neap tides continue over the next few days.
If you live near the river, take action now to ensure you can protect your property.
UPDATE @ 16:48 – The Environment Agency has stopped short of issuing a flood warning at this time, but have updated their alert with further information.
A warning may still be issued later tonight or on Thursday morning.
In the last 48 hours, half a month’s rain (45mm) has been recorded at Wroxall.

The Island cannot cope when it rains,
yet idiots still want to build more and more properties.
St Mary’s cannot cope.
Crime is on the increase.
I sometimes wonder if they only want to build more properties so the
Council get more council tax
You are describing under investment in the NHS and under funding from the Environment Agency. There is insufficient housing stock available for people earning at or below the average household income. We need to build more houses to house these people.
There is chronic poverty on the Island, run down buildings and an understaffed police force, we also have over reporting of minor crime compared to years past.
Why not seek out your Local MP and ask him to explain why the investment isn’t being made and seek out an alternative next time you get the opportunity to vote? Why not ask the council if they can explain why the Adult Social care bill is so big compared to the amount of Council Tax payers?
All it takes is money and desire.
What are your thoughts on the gov handing out a million visas last year? Do you reckon mass immigration is gonna have an impact on house prices?
How you you propose seeking out? “seldom seen Seeley”! Bloodhounds? Ghurka’s because his constituents sure as hell can’t find him! To try and ask him what he is actually doing for them!
Lockdown has caused huge strain on hospitals.
More people dying now than in covid.
Waiting lists massive .Not necessarily funding but effects if covid only NHS .
Local MP is always on holiday on our tax payers money to care about us citizen’s
Your Spot on John
I street how can you keep on building our hospitals can’t cope with numbers nor can the dentists more houses mean more people we don’t have the infrastructure to cope. Our sewage system is old and cannot cope. Roads are impossible with traffic jams all over the island. Why don’t the Iw Council impose the same restrictions they place on beach huts at ryde that you must be an island resident to be able to purchase do the same for houses and apartments
I will move to the isle of wight if I damn well choose to do so, as that is my right and my choice and there is nothing you can do about it
How do you get dentists, doctors, nurses, teachers, police, etc etc to come and work over here then? Cos the Island is certainly not producing enough of these.
Whilst all the NIMBY lot say it’s the housing causing the issues, where are the new estates in Whitwell, the true cause, climate change caused buy over consumption and corporations continues unabated. Time to wake up, climate change is real and we’re the ones causing it. Stop letting the government and their corporate mates get away with it.
With more housing ect going up it’s gonna effect drainage ect, rivers need dredging ,may be get the low life on community service to drag out washing machines, fridges old TV sets out of rivers here
