The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been scrambled to a collision involving a car and motorcycle on Military Road at Compton this afternoon (Sunday).
Island Echo is told that the crash has occurred at the entrance to Hanover Point car park.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at just before 16:45 with several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service mobilised, alongside Police.
It’s thought that a fire appliance from Freshwater has been mobilised in the interests of scene safety.
UPDATE @ 18:05 – The male motorcyclist has been flown directly to Southampton General Hospital with serious and potentially life-threatening injuries.
It’s understood that the occupants of the vehicle involved have been assessed and treated by local paramedics.
The road remains closed in both directions. As a result, Southern Vectis Route 12 buses are diverting.
UPDATE @ 19:22 – The mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit has been called to the scene, indicating the severity of the crash.
It’s understood the motorcyclist has suffered potentially life-threatening or life-changing injuries, with further details expected to be confirmed on Monday morning.
The road is to remain closed until late tonight.
UPDATE MONDAY – Military Road has now re-opened in both directions.

I really hope everyone will be OK but this has been an accident waiting to happen. Those cars should not be allowed to park on the verges. It blocks the view of anyone trying to exit the car park.
Hope everyone is OK. The ( free) verge parking at Compton (especially east of car park exit) severely impacts splay vision when leaving. Also bikes were screaming along Military Road from 07.15 this morning. Not pointing fingers, but everyone needs to take care. So many people over here right now.
No surprise I witnessed some appalling motorcycle riding when driving along there this afternoon overtaking on bends cutting up cars squeezing in to gaps at great speed
I’m not against motorcycles but what witnessed this afternoon was stupid and dangerous it’s a busy summers day think bike have some consideration for other road users

This news doesn’t make good reading. The Milly Road is such a fast road and some people use it like a racetrack. With all the additional traffic on the island at the moment, everyone must be so careful. This is tragic for the motorcyclist.
We drove past there a few minutes prior to the accident as we returned from Niton. Joining other comments we trust all involved make a full recovery. Heading toward Freshwater we were passed by motorcycles in both directions at very high speed – quite frightening to us even in our car. The military road at Compton was heavily congested with parking along verges on both sides of the road and both prior to and after the car park entrance. Many visitors unfamiliar with the junction, many children walking about returning to vehicles, much coming and going. We passed slowly and commented to each other on the dangerous situation.
I can’t wait until we get the bike road races going – if you it’s bad now with bikes racing on the military road you ain’t seen nothing!
So IWC and Police should also take responsibility as if due to vehicles parked on verge why have they not enforced, ( many times I drive past these parked cars , doors open into main road getting young children/ dog’s out ) no good saying there is clearway signs a mile away expecting drivers to observe,the cost to the lives of people involved and emergency services etc costs many £100s of thousands,a few sign’s and posts cost such a small amount in comparison saving the next life and money.
I agree that it is dangerous to park on the verges by the entrance to the car park when it is full ( or to avoid paying parking charges), but is it actually illegal?
Police used to ticket cars years ago if their tyres were just on the tarmac. That stopped some time ago and now there are often cars encroaching onto the road at Shephards, Grange and Compton. Can see some posts going in soon for 15 yards each side of Carpark exit. I always slow to <30 mph driving past there on busy weekends, you just have to.
Fred2 you will find that parking on the verges is not enforceble as the clear way only takes in the road. The police have ticketed in the past but those tickets were recinded due to the traffic order not covering the verges.
Police can’t enforce the ‘unenforceable’, Traffic Wardens no longer exist – Council/landowner’s responsibility and jurisdiction depending upon whether it’s a verge or private land.
Sadly it’s generally also poor hazard perception or attention that gets people into these unfortunate situations.. no blame apportioned to any party.
It’s time they put posts in along the verges both sides of the road this isn’t the first biker to be knocked if going past this entrance over the years all bikers know to slow down by here as cars can’t see up or down the road . Is it going to take a fatality before something is done along here
I thought Milly road was going to be closed? Has the cliff suddenly stopped crumbling? I remember as a kid everyone used it to test the performance of their cars/bikes. Such a dangerous stretch Even for someone born here
I am a Biker and ride every day to work. I would be riding past those cars very carefully, however many bikers seen to think the Military Road is a race track. Early Sunday mornings the road can be a full blown raceway with cameras set up to video the bikes.
I am a daily all weathers motorcycle commuter and leisure rider but I NEVER EVER go on the military road at weekends – just too many weekend warriors (in cars and on bikes) to be safe, as the accident statistics for that road will attest – it’s one of the most dangerous biking roads in the south.
