UPDATED: Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are working to resuscitate a man that has been taken ill at the wheel of his car in Wroxall this evening (Wednesday).
The incident has taken place on Clarence Road just up from The Star pub and has prompted a response from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, which is circling overhead in a bid to find a suitable landing site.
The main road between Wroxall and Ventnor is currently blocked in both directions as medical teams attend to the patient. Police have established a cordon around the scene.
Island Echo understands a car has crashed into another vehicle and a wall.
Southern Vectis say their Route 3 buses will be affected going forward.
UPDATE @ 18:15 – The air ambulance has now landed in nearby Upper Ventnor and is preparing to airlift the casualty to a mainland hospital. The specialist HEMS team are on the ground assisting local paramedics.
Southern Vectis have advised that their Route 3 buses will not be serving Upper Ventnor or Wroxall until further notice.
UPDATE @ 19:25 – Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man’s life could not be saved and he was declared deceased at the scene earlier this evening.
Next of kin have been informed.
The road remains closed in both directions whilst recovery of the vehicle takes place, however the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit are not expected to attend the scene of the crash and therefore the road will re-open shortly.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has now returned to base at Thurxton near Andover.
UPDATE THURSDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have this morning confirmed that the man was aged in his 70s.
A statement issued by the force says:
“A blue Vauxhall Agila had collided with a parked vehicle, a red Citroen C1, and then with a lamp post.
“Members of the public assisted at the scene and carried out CPR on the driver before an ambulance crew arrived.
“Unfortunately, they wee unable to revive the man.
“The incident is being treated as a sudden death and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”
