UPDATED: An aerial ladder appliance from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is attending a property in Ryde tonight (Saturday) where tiles have become loose in the strong winds.
The appliance from Newport Fire Station was called to a block of flats in West Street at just before 20:45 and is being used to inspect the roof and remove tiles which have been deemed unsafe.
The road has been closed at the junction with Hill Street and at Adelaide Place.
The incident comes as strong winds continue to batter the Island with driving rain, although there have been no other reported incidents this evening.
UPDATE @ 22:15 – Firefighters have now left the scene and the road has reopened.
The footpath surrounding the block of flats has been closed in the interests of safety.
