Strong winds, accompanied by heavy rain, are battering the Isle of Wight today (Saturday) with the adverse conditions causing disruption to local transport.
Hovertravel has been forced to cancel its cross-Solent operations due to the excessive winds. The next update is due at 09:45 11:45.
Wightlink and Red Funnel are both warning of likely disruption to their services, with Red Funnel also hit by technical troubles on their vehicle ferry operation leading to 2 cancellations so far.
On the roads, trees are reported as being down across Middle Road, Calbourne and Bedbury Lane, Freshwater.
IW Met Service has issued a yellow weather warning which comes into force at 13:00 this afternoon.
Gusts of up to 70mph are possible in the more exposed parts of the Island with hills and coastal areas most at risk. Inland gusts of 40-50mph are expected, perhaps locally reaching 60mph.
Rainfall totals aren’t expected to be very high – possibly 10mm or so – but when combined with the strong winds this may pose a problem.

At least today the Ferry operators and Hovertravel
have a genuine excuse.
Build a tunnel and services would not be affected.
Most people on the Island do not want a bridge or a tunnel. I am surprised you support such an idea as that would encourage main-landers to visit more often and bring their terrible crimes with them.
