92-year-old St Helens man Peter Coventry died from multiple traumatic injuries as a result of a road traffic collision, an inquest has heard this week.
Mr Coventry, of Downsview Road, crashed into a telegraph pole on Station Road on 4th June last year. He was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital but died shortly after arrival.
An inquest held in Newport today (Wednesday) heard how the former civil servant either suffered a medical episode at the wheel, or mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake.
Police have confirmed that the vehicle was mechanically sound but they could not determine what speed the vehicle was travelling at when it slammed into the solid wooden pole. It is thought that Mr Coventry was not wearing his seat belt.
Coroner Caroline Sumeray, who recorded that Mr Coventry died as a result of a road traffic collision, heard how a local GP advised Peter not to drive following a fall just 3 months before the fatal crash.
