Police are carrying out enquiries into a single-vehicle collision in Ventnor last night (Saturday) that destroyed a road sign and street furniture.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was made aware of the incident, that took place on the S-bend hill where Leeson Road meets St Boniface Road, at 20:45.
As reported by Island Echo, a black Vauxhall Astra was seen by witnesses to be travelling at speed down the winedy hill when it lost control, smashing into a road sign before spinning out.
The high-speed collision uprooted the road sign and scattered stone wall segments from the central reservation across the road.
It is believed that 4 persons, 2 men and 2 women, were involved in the collision, with a witness telling Island Echo that he saw a female physically struggling from her injuries as she exited the vehicle.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said:
“The driver and passengers were then seen exiting the vehicle and getting into a grey Mercedes, which was driven away from the scene.”
Enquiries are ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information to call Police on 101, quoting reference number 44260331299.

Time for Islandwide CCTV anything that helps catch
numpties, even facial recognition.
If people have nothing to hide they won’t mind.
Thank god the Police are bringing in facial recognition vans.
The sooner the better, driving on the island used to
be safe.
Yes, because installing CCTV on this road to capture the one incident that happens every two decades will totally justify the cost
One incident, lol.
Everyday there are incidents on island roads.
With all the technology available to us in 2026
cctv helps solve many issues.
Another so called driver on the island
With all the dangerous numpties on island roads
I am thinking of ditching the car for a van
Much safer.
When I say ditching I mean Part Exchanging
Not doing what numpties do and leave it in a ditch.
Lol
What, and become one of those van drivers you’re always quick to condemn? Yep, says it all
I haven’t switched yet!
He really does have serious issues
So a law abiding citizen who knows that
numpties are taking the piss has serious issues
Lol
IT IS THE LAWLESS NUMPTY B’STARDS WHO HAVE
SERIOUS ISSUES.
UNFORTUNATELY YOU CANNOT EDUCATE A NUMPTY!
You and isleofWill, deniers of the truth cannot be
helped.
Bless you both!
Not a problem when The King of the North is running
the show.
More law and order on island roads
They will be identified. The driver of the grey Mercedes may well be charged for his or her involvement too.
Hand yourselves in and save a waste of Police resources.
Should be banned for life and vehicles crushed
Only way to teach such persons
