Police across the Island are carrying out enquiries into a single-vehicle collision in Ventnor last night (Saturday) that destroyed a road sign and street furniture.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was made aware of the incident that took place on the S-bend hill, where Leeson Road meets St Boniface Road at 20:45.
As reported by Island Echo, a black Vauxhall Astra was seen by witnesses to be travelling at speed down the windy hill when it lost control, smashing into a road sign before spinning out.
The high-speed collision uprooted the road sign and scattered stone wall segments from the central reservation across the road.
It is believed that 4 persons, 2 men and 2 women, were involved in the collision, with a witness telling Island Echo that he saw a female physically struggling from her injuries as she exited the vehicle.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said:
“The driver and passengers were then seen exiting the vehicle and getting into a grey Mercedes, which was driven away from the scene.”
Enquiries are ongoing, and police have urged anyone with information to call 101, quoting reference number 44260331299.
