Motorists are to face more than 10 weeks of travel disruption on the Sandown to Shanklin corridor from next week due to the erection of temporary traffic lights at Skew Bridge.
It has been confirmed that from Monday (17th October), 2-way lights will be put in place on Sandown Road between the junction with Cemetery Road and the southern side of Skew Bridge itself.
Disruption is being brought about due to the rebuilding of a retaining wall on the north side of the bridge, adjacent to 100 Sandown Road. It comes after the wall was damaged by a vehicle.
Island Roads is undertaking the works, which will continue until 23rd December, on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council.
It’s said that the lights are needed to maintain a temporary pedestrian footway, despite there being an alternative route via crossing the railway line and through Lake Cliff Gardens.

10 weeks? That is what they said about Queens Road Ryde, and how long now? Watch out Shanklin, your turn is to come.
But how long would it take if the job was properly manned, made to actually work, no phones, braces for the trousers and 24/7 shift, all of which should be the case where roads of any importance are involved? But no, this is the Isle of Wight and the general public will be messed around because no one here is capable of organising, or doing, something properly.
They were all sat in deck chairs the other day when I drove past still there an hour later. It’s a micky take as you quite rightly say.
10 weeks, what are they doing?, working 1 hour a day.
Tell them to take less cigarette, newspaper and coffee breaks and get their finger out.
2 weeks max to do such work.
Seems that traffic is being deliberately held up by countless traffic lights on every small job now. All a ploy to make motoring as difficult as possible until only the better people have freedom of the roads once again when the plebs are priced off the highway.
Nice 1 ,ready for half term Chao’s
Ten weeks to rebuild a wall damaged by a car – disgusting. I bet it would be done in a couple of days on the mainland. Island Roads really are useless, just like the council.
Very true.
IW Council are Crap
Must be a ruddy big wall to take them that long. Hope they don’t get blisters from leaning on their tools rather than working with them
is that the same 10 weeks for wall repair Queens Road Ryde?
Ten weeks to build a wall. Really??
It’s not very logical is it?
you have an established footpath as an alternate route, safer for pedestrians to use, yet they decide to install temporary lights.
this causes disruption, pollution, and considerable cost to the project.
I think a project manager needs to be employed to bring some common sense.
Forget about so called Managers, just someone with down to earth common sense.
Unfortunately Jill, you need someone to manage work projects, common sense? Yes, definitely.
Without a structure in place, nothing gets done, people would cherrypick work, it would fall apart and become even more costly.
This is a good example of not using common sense, their reason is probably the uneven footpath disabled or unstable people would have to negotiate using the obvious route.
There is probably a better answer if it was thought about properly though
TEN WEEKS, ten weeks. What are they building, the great wall of Lake? Unbelievable.
10 weeks delays, well i guess we are talking about Island Roads who just love causing chaos as long as they possibly can with traffic lights being erected here there and everywhere, road ahead closed signs in place when the the actual road ahead isn’t actually closed, it is a small road off of it, diversion signs that take you in circles and back to where you started, 10 weeks i suppose is a bonus but it will be longer when they drill through a gas/water main making it longer.
Ten weeks to rebuild a wall A WALL who’s doing it haydrian jesus it only take two weeks to fling up the shell of a house I’m a brickie I know this providing the scaffold firm get their fingers out how in the name of all that is holy does it take ten weeks to rebuild a wall and by the sounds of it it’s only a repair job not a total rebuild my god the British work ethic is a joke no wonder this country is so screwed up
Could build a house in 10 weeks just another joke from Island roads perhaps they could fix the subsidence outside Wiltons at the same time.
Here is an extract from the “Time for Work Strategy” from island roads.
Small pot hole – 1 week, medium pot hole 2 – weeks, large pot hole – 4 weeks, Weed clearance – 3 weeks depending on if power tools used, if so, add another week, drains – 6 weeks, Walls to be repaired – 10 weeks, (size is unimportant), setting up and removal of traffic lights add 3 days for each. If Wight Fibber are involved add 8 weeks and contact the electricity companies and warn them of outages soon.
Before anyone consults legal bods, this is a joke ok. But it could well be true judging by the speed at which they work at.
