A Shanklin man who was caught speeding on the A3 in Guildford has been banned from driving for 6 months after totting up points on his licence.
32-year-old Kane Hammond appeared in court on Tuesday charged with speeding – namely travelling in his Ford Galaxy at 65mph in a 50mph limit on 14th August last year.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, detailed that Hammond had been caught speeding at 07:15 in the morning but that it wasn’t the first time he had broken the speed limit. The court heard that the 32-year-old, of Pomona Road, had previously been caught speeding in 2020 and was convicted of failing to report an accident in 2019.
Hammond attempted to sway Magistrates with claims of significant hardship, predominately affecting 3 children. However, the bench found there was no significant hardship and banned the unemployed driver from the roads for 6 months.
Kane was also ordered to pay a £40 fine, £85 costs and a £34 surcharge.

This is not isle of wight news.
“A Shanklin man” makes it island news. Also had previously been caught speeding in 2020 and was convicted of failing to report an accident in 2019. So a proven bad driver who needs to take time and learn to drive and learn some respect.
Crumbs a magistrate that did not fall for the hard luck story. Keep the scum off the road.
Why was there a 50mph limit in force on a major trunk road and probably a dual carriageway ?
It seems designed to catch people out – where one would expect a more realistic speed limit.
It’s so easy to miss the sign and assume the speed is 60 or 70.
If we’re honest we have all made this mistake, but fortunately not been caught out.
These roads are all well marked with the speed limit. Mistakes cost lives.
If you ‘so easily’ miss a road sign, you are guilty of driving without due care and attention. And your subjective view of what constitutes a ‘realistic’ speed limit is irrelevant – the actual sign is mandatory. You may disagree with it but you are required by law to comply with it. Ignore it at your peril.
You need to get off the island more!!!
It’s easy to miss the sign if you’re not paying attention!
That’s driving without due care and attention.
This is not island news. 50 limit is far too slow
Typical islander answer, want to reduce collisions but don’t want to slow down !
