4 Isle of Wight teams – Brading, Shanklin, Pan and Wroxall – have all battled through to the semi-finals of Hampshire cup competitions.
Hampshire Trophy Quarter Final: Brading Town 6-4 Fleetlands
The quarter final began bizarrely with the referee not turning up. However, both sides agreed to allow a spectator to deputize for the absent official.
Fleetlands took the lead (0-1), but the Romans soon equalized through Jacob Treagus (1-1). Dan Vale then gave Brading a half time goal advantage by converting a dubious penalty (2-1).
In the 2nd half, Fleetlands levelled from a corner (2-2) before Brading again took the lead when Billy Chugg smashed the ball into the top corner (3-2). Chugg then scored again on the hour mark by deftly skipping round the keeper and rolling the ball home (4-2).
Again, the visitors pulled a goal back (4-3) and could have equalized but for a superb Ben Gearing save. Dan Vale then restored Brading’s 2-goal advantage by turning his defender inside out and finding the far top corner (5-3).
Fleetlands made it 5-4 with only two minutes to go. Brading defender Luke Hitchcox produced a stunning last-minute block when Fleetlands seemed destined to level. However, Brading’s Dan Vale had the final word when he raced away to complete his 4th hat-trick in four games (6-4).
Brading Town: Gearing, Shaw, Connor, Hitchcox, Hanmore, Oatley, Lawson, Treagus, Vale, Bennett, Chugg. Subs: Sayers, Hatch, Page
After the game, Brading manager Steve Lawton said:
“Huge credit to the boys today; I am extremely proud of all of them. We’ve had some tough times this season; it’s well documented how many players have come and gone, but these boys have given me everything. Yes, they can drive you mad but are an honest hard-working bunch.
“I’m giving my man-of-the-match to the team today: everyone played their part.”
Hampshire Trophy Quarter Final: Shanklin 3-0 Stockbridge
Last year’s beaten trophy finalists Shanklin cruised comfortably into the semi-finals of this year’s competition by beating Hampshire League Stockbridge 3-0 at the County Ground.
After the game, Shanklin manager Paul Haward said:
“We played well today and deserved to win the game. Man-of-the-match Kyle Drew opened the scoring. In the second half with the wind behind us, we created lots of chances and doubled our lead after an Iain Seabrook fee kick was volleyed in by Ben Gregory. Nicky Vyse made sure of the win with the 3rd goal.”
Hampshire Vase Quarter Final: Bisterne United Dorset 2-3 Pan Community
Pan travelled to Bournemouth and beat a well-organised Bisterne team with ex-Wessex and Southern League players in their ranks.
Bisterne took the lead after a mix up in the Pan defence (1-0), but the Island boys kept battling and equalised 10 minutes before half time through Ross Lacey (1-1).
Pan picked up the pace in second half and took the lead after Ashley Gulliver was brought down, and Gosh Gwilliam fired home the resulting penalty (1-2). With 20 minutes to go, Bisterne equalised from a free kick (2-2). Jack Davies then raced through the Bisterne defence to win the game for Pan with 8 minutes remaining and ensure Pan’s progress to the semi-finals.
After the game, Pan co-manager John Sivier said:
“Me and Steve couldn’t be more proud of the lads at the way they played and gave their all against a very experienced and well-organised side, who had not lost a single game before today.”
Hampshire FA Plate Quarter- Final: Wroxall 2-2 AFC Stubbington (Wroxall won 6-4 on penalties)
Wroxall overcame an arachnophobic Stubbington side on penalties after drawing 2-2 over 90 minutes. There was a bizarre build up to the game when the Stubbington team got changed on the pitch because of the presence of spiders in the changing rooms.
Stubbington took the lead (0-1), but Paul Bishton equalized with a 45-yard volley (1-1) to leave the score level at the half time break. The Hampshire side retook the lead in the 2nd half (1-2) before Pip Hamilton put Wroxall back on equal terms with a strike from the edge of the penalty area (2-2).
Wroxall’s winning goal in the penalty shootout was scored by goalkeeper Simon Rowland.
In Isle of Wight Division 1 …
The 34-game winning streak of champions Whitecroft & Barton Sports, who won every single league game they played in 2021, came to an end at Slade Road in Ryde, where they were held to a draw by Division 1 newcomers Oakfield. The goal scorer for the Oakers was Liam Bennett. W&B are now 10 points ahead of 2nd-placed Shanklin at the top of the Isle of Wight Division 1 table.
