UPDATED: A man, a woman and a teenage boy have been rescued from a house fire in Binstead this morning (Wednesday).
All 3 occupants of the property have escaped injury thanks to firefighters using an extension ladder to quickly rescue them from a first floor window.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus have now entered the family home to tackle the flames on the ground floor.
4 appliances – 3 from Ryde and 1 from Newport – and the Incident Command Unit are on scene at Hillrise Avenue having been called at just before 01:50.
The road is closed and Police are in attendance.
UPDATE @ 02:35 – The fire has been extinguished and all persons are accounted for thanks to the swift response from Ryde’s retained firefighters.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are now checking over all 3 casualties.
Meanwhile, Positive Pressure Ventilation is being used to rid the property of smoke.
UPDATE @ 03:12 – Dean Hayward, Senior Officer for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed to Island Echo that a freezer located within the porch area – described as an older unit and under a countertop – is to blame for starting the fire.
Smoke alarms previously fitted by the fire service have been credited with alerting the homeowners to the developing blaze, which allowed them to retreat upstairs and close all doors.
Fire control operators are said to have given fire survival advice over the telephone prior to the arrival of the first crews on scene.
The 2 males and 1 female rescued from the property have been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital as a precautionary measure. 3 pet cats have also escaped uninjured.
Although not a cause in this instance, a switched-off tumble dryer inside the property has been identified by fire officers as one which has been recalled over fire fears. Islanders are being reminded to check to see if their dryer is affected.
Fire crews are now preparing to leave the scene and return to station.
