A Shanklin man who crashed his motorbike into a stationary car at Binstead – and was later found to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash – has been banned from the roads for 29 months.
Aiden Hall, 31, of Regent Street, previously admitted drug driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court back in January.
Prosecutor Lauren McConnell told the court that on 29th July 2024, Hall was involved in a road traffic collision on Quarr Hill in Binstead, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The court heard how Hall – who was travelling down Quarr Hill towards Wootton – crashed into the rear of a stationary Mazda which was waiting for the vehicle in front of it to make a turn into a private driveway. Hall suffered serious injuries to his face and collarbone in the smash and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital.
A drugs test was conducted at the hospital where it was later revealed that the level of BZE – a breakdown product of cocaine – in Hall’s system was more than 9x the specified limit.
Another drug (cannabis) was found in Hall’s system but he was not over the specified limit.
Defending Hall, Oscar Vincent said that his client was confused as to how there were traces of cannabis in his system when he’s not a user but that he accepts taking cocaine some 2-3 days before the crash. The court also heard how Hall has not used cocaine since the incident.
Magistrates handed Hall a 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work and 15 rehabilitation days attached. He was banned from driving for 29-months and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £114 surcharge fee.
